Why wait after Dec.1 to across the line and why not get it done before Dec.1?

For those who haven't reach 1MM status but are close and don't expect to have a lot of BIS miles in the future, I'm assuming the best course of action is to get as close as you can to 1MM status as possible before December 1 (without actually crossing the threshold) through non-BIS methods: credit card spending, SPG points, etc. Then cross the threshold after December 1.

Well, the sky HAS fallen, but change is inevitable.
Not that I have a large dog in the race, but without credit cards and rewardsnetwork, the 300,000 miles that I’ll need to cross the next million mile threshold will take years. Tempting as it is to transfer Starwood points, I don’t know if I can justify the transfer just to get 4 SWUs; I know that I can't justify $450 for an elite M/C. |

This would be worth it if it lasted more than a year. But with that only being good through 2012, even that is unattractive.
I had kicked around the idea of getting this card previously (mainly for the AC benefits), and if this card would be valid for earning MM status for the long term, this would have pushed me over the edge. Knowing it only lasts for a year.. well, I'm not going to waste my time signing up for 1 year and then cancelling. |

This is really :td::td:. As a non-US/UK based member, it is already difficult for us to earn without the advantage of US based member for all these years especially without the CC spendings to our advantage. Not including Elite and COS bonus miles makes it even more difficult for us.
I guess it is quite useless to ask AAdvantage to reconsider this point. Cheers! Here goes the second NON US based flyer. I mean even if you fly 100K a year it will take 10 years to achieve a million miles. With bonus that would have gotten it down to 5 and with some promos let us say to about 4,5 years. And now that non-us residents can't get the citibank card that is really annoying. It really doesn't put US based and non-US based flyers in the same basket. |

I'll be crossing 1mm in Nov. Sounded like I should stop using my Citi AA card so that I will cross in Dec and get extra 35k miles.

I have to say that while I am not happy about this it will probably have zero effect on my travel or other habits. I still get miles, although not ones counting towards MM on my CC. I still get all of the other benefits. It is a downgrade to the MM program but I dont see it as being negative enough to effect me given the other benefits of the program. I might see it differently if I had 100K lifetime miles, but well, I dont.

What Counts
I am trying to reach the 2mm miles before 12/1/11 with 160m to go.
It is my understanding that until 12/1/11, it will count toward this goal if you purchase miles? What about "share" miles. Does that count also at this time and is it limited to 15m max.? What about transfer or exchanges in points.com? Thanks for the advice! |

By Dec. 1 UA will have announced the new Mileage Plus program details. If I don't like the changes I see, I will switch to AA and transfer all my SPG and the Wyndham points to AA to beef up my life time count. :)
