[COLOR="Navy"]Welcome to the 2019 Domestic Dining thread and the resulting discussion/trip reports/photos/shared experiences. Here, in this wiki post, I'll strive to explain what you should expect on AA flights in First and Business, meals-wise. Keep in mind that there are many domestic flights, so there are quite a few parameters to keep track of.

Basically, in its best condensed form, you should expect to receive a meal between 4:59am - 8pm on flights longer than 900 miles, which equals about two hours in the air. From that point, there are exceptions, and specific timing parameters.

What to Expect - Mainline:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.
  • Up to 699 miles: Light snacks such as a fig bar, cookies, and/or pretzels
  • 700-899 miles: Warmed nuts, a snack plate (fruit/cheese, pita/hummus, or spinach dip/pita), and a cookie
  • 900-1298 miles: A meal (fruit/breakfast entree; salad/entree) followed by a cookie; no meals between 1:30-4pm
  • 1298-2199 miles: A full meal including an appetizer, with cake for lunch desserts and premade ice-cream for dinner desserts
  • 2200 miles and above: Same as 1298-2199 miles, but consists of made-to-order sundaes or a cheese plate for both lunch and dinner desserts

What to Expect - Regional:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.
  • Up to 175 miles: A light snack mix along with beverage service
  • 176-899 miles: Sweet and savory, organic/healthy snack choices (snack basket)
  • 900-2199 miles: Warm mixed nuts, two meal options, and dessert. (For flights over 2200 miles, you will receive the same selection of snacks from 176-899 miles as a pre-arrival snack. All regional meal flights leaving after 8:00pm will also receive sweet and savory snacks as the only option. Editor's note: A regional jet for 2000+ miles? Hope that never happens!)
American Eagle flights do not offer pre-ordering of meals.

All of the meal flights that fall under the above timing parameters will receive two choices; normally, one meat and one vegetarian.

Longer westbound flights leaving from the east coast (transcontinental; non-premium) are not officially exceptions, but some flights after 8pm receive a full dinner service (such as the 8:05pm MIA-SAN flight, or the 8:30pm PHL-LAS flight). Additionally, non-premium transcontinental red-eye flights will receive snack basket service upon departure, then a continental breakfast box prior to arrival.

Official Exceptions:
The following flights all fall under 900 miles, but will receive a full meal service, with the exception of flights leaving between 1:31-4pm. Despite some of the listed flights being over 900 miles, they are remaining listed here, based on the AA website for documentation purposes.
  • Chicago (ORD) - AUS/BDL/BOS/DCA/EWR/JFK/LGA/MSY/RDU
  • Dallas (DFW) - BJX/ORD/MEX/QRO/SLP
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) - PAP
  • Los Angeles (LAX) - DEN
  • Miami (MIA) - DCA/IAD/PAP
  • New York (LGA) - ATL
  • Phoenix (PHX) - MZT

Additional Information:
  • JFK-LAX/SFO; MIA-LAX are considered premium transcontinental flights, and as such, receives a more refined service with three meal choices, per-course service, printed menus, and tray/tablecloth linens in both F/J. Those flights now are the only domestic flights in the system to offer special meals as another option (which can be reserved by either preordering online, or calling). Red-eye flights will receive a full "supper/snack" meal service, which is basically a condensed dinner service.

  • Hawaiian meal service is very similar to what you'd expect on 2200+ mile flights, but there also will be Hawaiian rolls served, along with a pre-arrival continental breakfast/snack (dependent on the length of the route). Tropical warmed nuts are also currently served.

  • All flights over 700 miles, regardless of a meal being served or not, will receive warm mixed nuts and a cookie.

  • At this time, pre-ordered meals are not available on American Eagle flights.

A few of us posted this DBML upthread. Here's mine: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30939411-post277.html

For rational people there is no such controversy but there's an unfortunately large number of people whose only skill in life is to be perpetually offended and to shout on the internet about how offended they are - best to ignore them. In reality the set of people who should order a special meal is: Anyone who wants to do so!

I ordered the diabetic meal and Mr. AtomicLush ordered the gluten-free meal. They are EXACTLY the same meal with a different bread roll. Same as a prior post minus the shrimp cocktail - no appetizer for this exception flight. Warm cookie (chocolate chip or snickerdoodle) was offered to everyone. Very good service overall on this flight (other than delay and weird holding patterns due to Sabre outage which made the flight absurdly longer than it needed to be).

I feel like delays just follow AtomicLush based on previous posts

If you want something substantial, get the meatloaf. I've had it before on the transcon JFK-LAX.

If you want something lighter, order the Shrimp.

If you want to be dissatisfied and kick yourself for the remainder of the flight, order the Chow Mein.

Kosher Breakfast
April 28, 2019

First time ordering the Kosher breakfast and it was OK, perhaps a little better than the unusual breakfast egg dish. But talk about wrapping. The entire tray was wrapped. Our excellent FA offered to unwrapped the tray and did so in the galley. But even after that, the individual items were wrapped, with the omelet double wrapped.

LOL, there is an omelet in here somewhere.

Two buns, one cInnamon, the other brioche raisin. They were tasty but pretty dry. And canned pear and peach as the fruit.

Kosher meals are wrapped that way on purpose, I don’t know all the reasons why but it’s
my understanding that’s part of the requirement to keep it Kosher.

A frozen omelette that expires in Oct, based on the 1 year shelf life that would make it *only* 6 months old! Lucky you.

Considering religious Jews can't even mix food on a washed plate, the double wrapping is presented to ensure that the food while being cooked in a non-kosher oven will not come into contact with vapors/particles or actual food from the other dishes. It's basically two factor protection.

So many questions though. The cup is full, but so is the mini. Did you get a double (and then toss the mini before the photo)? Or do you drink the mix plain first and then add the booze?

The first mini (empty) is actually hiding in the seat back pocket......you can see the tip of the orange top a little bit hehe.

This is actually an improvement presentation-wise. My previous forays with the Kosher breakfast came served on plastic plates so they would be disposable and were not heated at all. Fortunately, I'm not religious because that experience sent me right back to AVML LOL

Kosher Dinner
May 1, 2019

Oy. Diabetic Dinner on the manifest but catering delivered a Kosher Dinner. Apparently T-24 hours doesn't mean anything to catering in PHL. I changed my selection from Kosher to Diabetic nearly 40 hours before departure, but FA had to apologize that catering screwed up and couldn't or wouldn't deliver a Diabetic meal at that point. The food was bad enough (think 1970's TV dinners) but having to unwrap multiple layers of shrink wrap added insult to injury. On the other hand, it was better than my last AC experience where AC forgot to load any meals on a 5 hour LAX-YUL lunch flight. LOL on the double layer stacked meal tray. Fortunately I was in 1A on the 332, so I could place items on the bulkhead counter.

OK, Short Ribs with couscous and Mediterranean veggies sounds good, but not as a TV dinner.

Five minutes of unwrapping et voila.

Love the "freshest & highest quality ingredients" line. They forgot add "... that we can provide when AA only pays us $3 for a meal."

The lemon cake was dry as a bone and chocolate sauce fused to the dish. LOL.

2:15 from arrival and I'm starving. I'll be heading for the FL for a real dinner before my drive home to The OC.
