AAdvantage Buy Back and Boost / Buy Up Status
AA generally offers members reasonably close to requalifying for status near the end of the year the option to buy back their existing status, or on occasion to buy up to the next highest status tier.
These offers are generally made by email to AAdvantage members beginning some time in November.

Made Platinum again. This year, it was 9,057 EQD and 65,489 EQM
Offer received yesterday for Platinum Pro of $1,345
I had actually contemplated a mileage run at year-end to get the EQMs but ultimately passed as Platinum Pro didn't seem worth it to spend the time flying around and it certainly isn't worth $1,345
Did a few Premium Economy flights last year, which is probably what boosted my EQDs for the year.

Buy Back offer of $1,545. Nine years as EXP. I finished 2018, with 3900 EQD, 39,900 EQM and 22 Segments. I'll pass on the offer, as I should make Lifetime Platinum on Monday.

Friend got buy offer for Gold for $995 on same day that everyone got free elite trials. Is this because AA offered the elite trial to those to entice them back to flying and buy offers to those that flew recently?

My husband was Plat Pro, and got the buyback offer of $1800 the same day I got offered Plat Pro for free (I did not fly enough to earn status last year). Not only is he not buying Plat Pro back, he's now pissed at American.

My offer was 1,895 for PLT PRO, last year I flew 74 segments and spent 9.2K, I looked at my schedule after Feb 1st 90% of my travel will be on short flights < 500 miles or just over, so why bother ? Also with my schedule I will be PLT PRO again by May/June.

I am being offered Platinum for $1445 or 144.5K miles. Previously, it was just the cash offer. Shows " Exclusive for you - Pay with miles for a limited time."

Buy-Up worth every penny
For the first time in over 10 years, only 75K miles in 2018 and no offer of buy-up. Why is the buy-up to EXP worth it? I've done it twice before when due to illness, I couldn't fly as much that year. Every single year though, the 4 (used to be 8) EVIP upgrades make it all worthwhile. I take my husband and we fly somewhere wonderful, Asia or Europe, first class and we pay for coach tickets. Last year, we saved over $16,000 total with these EVIP upgrades. So sad. No more, but worth every penny in the past for us.

Platinum Pro in 2018, based on 2017 activity. Was EXP for 5 years prior. Low AA activity in 2018 (under 20k EQM) since I switched my business elsewhere.
Website has been offering Gold got $699, Platinum for $1299. Looks like they added the mileage redemption overo too.
Not buying since I expect 2019 flying on AA to be on "as needed" basis. They've ruined loyalty for me, and I'm not going to pay them for the honor of doing more business with them.

Ended the year with a little over 35,000 miles, but short of qualifying for gold by $100. Offer has dropped from over $600 to $219. AA can try again.

Been PLT for 4 years, only got back to GLD last year (just barely). Before meeting the GLD threshold my offers were something like $465 for GLD or $1445 for PLT. Well after qualifying for GLD, the PLT offer didn't improve at all, which sort of p*sses me off. No way in hell am I paying $1445 for PLT. Hilariously, my wife's offer is $1299 to buy back PLT (same boat as me). No thanks Dougie!

- paid F on AA if the price is too good to pass up (esp on domestic Widebodies)
- Non-stop flight on an RJ both ways (they're rapidly becoming the more comfortable types, and are immune to further densification)
