Using Residual Value From a Nonrefundable Ticket
I couldn't find anything recent, so I wanted to ask. If I cancel a nonrefundable ticket on AA online, how do I rebook a new ticket using the residual value (after the change fee) if the original ticket can't be accessed anymore since it was cancelled?
Can this be done online? Do I need to request a refund?

Call AA to find ticket and book new flight. It will be easier if u have the ticket number -- which if u don't have the original aa confirmation would be available on ur credit card statement. If it was a non refundable fare they aren't going to refund u the ticket or residual balance. U would get a voucher.

One way would be to build an itinerary; place it on hold; call AA and ask them to apply the dollar value available on the cancelled ticket to the new itinerary. You'll need the original ticket number, NOT the record locator number.
I believe that travel on the new itinerary must begin prior to one year from the date you purchased the cancelled ticket.

But could I receive the residual voucher in a voucher without having to book a new ticket, and if so could it be good for a full year from now? I have the ticket number.

Set your calendar for one year from the date you purchased that unused ticket. You must begin travel within one year from that date.

Don't ask for a voucher! I had booked a non-refundable J ticket DCA-AMS for later this month. I changed the return and the flight was about $800 cheaper. I got a paper voucher in the mail. Still no e-vouchers, which in 2017 is ridiculous. Regardless, if your ticket is wholly unused, do as others stated ... put a flight on hold and then call AA to exchange it.
