Using Residual Value From a Nonrefundable Ticket

I couldn't find anything recent, so I wanted to ask. If I cancel a nonrefundable ticket on AA online, how do I rebook a new ticket using the residual value (after the change fee) if the original ticket can't be accessed anymore since it was cancelled?

Can this be done online? Do I need to request a refund?
