Unless the US Government specifically allows for a US airline to have a US codeshare on a given international route with a given foreign airline, the US airline isn't allowed by the USG to codeshare. And the USG has various reasons why it may delay or deny US airlines' codeshare requests or why it may even revoke codeshare allowances previously granted.

I really wish a Philippine airlines was with an alliance with AA or DL. Seems like Philippines is the only Asian country that doesn't have an airline in an alliance, and I would think they would by now or at least partnered with one of the Big 3 given the two countries extensive history and relationship.

As noted above, legally they couldn't. Also, DL has service to MNL through NRT.

It's too bad that the portrayal of AA 167 from JFK to Manila in the film "The Bourne Legacy" was fictional. That flight number was the now defunct JFK-NRT flight, on which the actors in reality would have had to connect to JL metal to get to MNL...

But, I fail to see the dilemma here. Why not just book a JL or CX connection, for example? The code share simply doesn't exist, so no use fretting about it.

And in J, the earning is quite reasonable.

What law is preventing a Philippines airline from being in Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or OW?

And DL flying to NRT to MNL is irrelevant to the above.

Have you read the whole thread? Also my reply was in reply to your statement in which you list DL. DL doesn't need a codeshare partner since they fly there.

As for codeshare issue till very recently the Philippines was a category 2 rated. Prevented them from codesharibg with US carrier.

Per the previous post they received a Category 1 in 2014. That's not what I would consider very recently. The Category 2 may have prevented codeshares with Phillipine based airlines but it shouldn't have prevented AA from codesharing on a JL or CX flight.

Only if those airlines agreed to extra security do i think they could be codeshared. Also in terms of striking an agreement 2014 is not that long ago, only 3 years ago. Its not like they were in an alliance with waiting partner. Plus I'm not sure if anyone really wants to be assosciated with them. Check out their J class with bunk bed seats.

Exactly, it's been 3 years.

This is why I'm curious Philippine Airlines hasn't gotten into one of the SA, ST, or OW.

There must be something other than a safety rating that was updated 3 years ago holding them back.

If it is a matter of soft/hard product then I'm not sure why Philippines Airlines is being singled out and left out since one could make the claim that the partner airlines in any of the big 3 alliances has just as good/bad product as PA.

I remember this scene. I was laughing so hard because I wished it were true!

AFAIK, Philippines is the only airline that has as bad a J hard product. They pack them in 2/2/2 on A330 with bunk bed seating. Considering J, imagine Y. Each alliance has the step-chuld so to speak. Philippines is the drunk uncle no one wants. At least from what ive read i dont see any of the alliances wanting them.

PAL has the only nonstops from the US to Manila and also to Cebu. What's the incentive to change/join/upgrade? Seems low... I mean, consider that they include A340 planes with recliners in J on multiple 14+ hour transpacific routes (CEB - LAX, and MNL - SFO).

I flew YVR-MNL r/t on a PAL 777-300ER last year in Y and it was perfectly fine. Actually at 33" pitch, two full meals, polite and attentive service, a basic amenity kit and metal cutlery not plastic it was better than any US airline in long-haul Y. Oh, the ticket also cost less than $500 USD.

Now, their J is terrible, but that's a different story.

I think Philippine Airlines tried to join Oneworld but the ownership/management changed hands.

Many would not fly them long-haul if they had a competitor flying direct from MNL given their product in J. I personally prefer taking a stop in HKG or NRT because I don't like both hard and soft product.
