Award carrier, connection, date or routing changes: As long as origin and destination (but read on for exceptions such as first / last segment) remain the same, change / award redeposit fees are usually waived for awards under certain circumstances when date, connection, routing or carrier changes are made But:Airline / carrier changes incur no change or redeposit fees as long as you do not try to change between all AA oneworld airlines and non-oneworld airlines or vice versa.
E.g. an AA award such as SEA-HNL-SYD using AS can not be changed to use JL without requiring award redeposit. An award using AA LAX-HKG can be changed to JL via NRT or CX Without redeposit ing miles.
If Maximum Permitted Miles (usually 125% of the most direct available routing) for an award is exceeded, two awards may be charged

Contact AAdvantage Reservations to change your itinerary, pay the applicable charge and have your ticket reissued prior to travel.

AAdvantage® mileage will be reinstated for unused and unexpired awards upon payment of a processing fee. For tickets booked on or after November 1, 2018, AAdvantage®mileage will be reinstated upon payment of a processing fee for unused and unexpired awards canceled prior to departure. For each additional award reinstatement from the same account at the same time, an additional charge will be collected. These charges are payable by credit card.
Award class changes: MileSAAver to AAnytime changes generally incur no fees; conversely, AAnytime to MileSAAver awards generally will.
Award cabin class "upgrades" (e.g. Y to J): If the change made is an increase of miles to another cabin class, fees are not normally charged (but some government required fees such as UK Air Passenger Duty, airport passenger facility fees, etc. may change).
Redepositing awards incurs a fee of $150 other than for Executive Platinum members redepositing to their accounts. Will the entire ticket be redeposited even if only upgrading one-way of the round trip?
I need to rebook a flight outside the 12 month window and trying to avoid the $150 redeposit fee.

I tried to change my award booking. Previous award is PHL-SEA-SFO (SEA - SFO is using alaskan airlines). The new flight is all AA. PHL-CLT-SFO. When I called them, they told me they need to re-deposit the miles and it will cost me $200. Is this correct?

Unfortunately yes, changing from an All-Partner award (or whatever it's technically called) to an all-AA award will incur the fee, even if the O&D stay the same.

Thanks, fortunately for me, AA cancels the first flight AA-SEA and put me on earlier flight which made this case goes to Involuntary award change. I'm able to get them to change it without incurring fee.

MileSaaver to AAnytime
For some reason, I didn't realize---or had forgotten---that I could change a MileSAAver to an AAnytime Award with no fee, until a rep told me that this morning (I thought I could only change within the same category fee-free). I checked the WIKI and see MileSAAver to AAnytime changes being fee-free mentioned, as well.
Am I correct that if I purchase an Economy MileSAAver with AA on Iberia + AA (Iberia from AMS-MAD, the rest back to the US on AA), in hopes of a Business MileSAAver opening up, and then if it doesn't, decide later to change to an Economy AAnytime on a different date, that I am able to do this change without a fee? (This would be same origin and destination, but the AA would be straight from AMS to the US without a European layover).

Need clarification on awards including FJ and switching "other" carriers
Hi, I read the wiki in this thread and the other thread on AA award rules (AA oneworld & Other Airline Partner Award information, rules (master thd)) but I was not sure whether FJ still is considered a non-OneWorld (OW) partner now that Fiji is a "OneWorld Connect" airline, and / or if fees apply for changing to different OW or non-OW airline within a ticket. I also looked at aa.com, and they still show FJ in the list of "Other airline partners".
This is what is in the wiki:
1) IAD-SFO (AS) -> SFO-NAN (FJ) -> NAN-AKL (FJ)
2) AKL-NAN (FJ) -> NAN-LAX (FJ) -> LAX-IAD (AA)
If FJ still is considered an "Other" partner, would any of the following carrier changes be allowed without incurring the award change fee:
A) Changing FJ to TN in either of my flights above (assuming FJ still is considered an "other partner", this would remain a ticket with "other partners" but I was not sure if other partner airlines could be changed)?

Currently I have MLA-LGW (BA), LHR-JFK-SFO (AA) all in J as a single award. If I change to MLA-LGW / LHR-SFO in F on BA, is there a change fee for that? Or is it just miles difference + any fees (BA fuel surcharge)?
Does the fact that there was a schedule change increasing my layover in JFK by several hours make any difference? Does the schedule change allow me to just cancel and rebook?
Do I need to call in for this it is it all possible to do online?

As far as I know FJ is still an "Other" partner. As long as at least one segment of the itinerary is on an "Other" partner then the award will remain an All-Partner award (or whatever AA calls it now). So in your above scenarios all should be no-fee changes as the award will remain All-Partner.

I think I understand this correctly, but just want to make sure.
So if I make a booking for more than 21 days out today, I pay no fee. Let us say I book an award on CX for Aug 4.
Then on Aug 2, a better CX flight on the same date, Aug 4, opens up. My understanding from the above quote and the rest of the thread is that I would pay no close-in fee to change to that flight since the new travel date is not within 21 days of the original booking date (even though it is within 21 days from when I make the change)?
Similarly, let us say on July 25, CX releases award space for a more convenient flight on Aug 1. Can I change my Aug 4 flight to the new flight on Aug 1 without a fee since it is not within 21 days of the original booking date (even though it is within 21 days from when I make the change on July 25)?
That is, basically you can use last minute award seat availability without paying a close-in fee as long as you already have an award booked more than 21 days before? (Obviously subject to same carrier and origin and destination rules as changing any of that would trigger the $150 fee.)
I have no status on AA and am trying to front-run the 10% rebate going away by booking some awards which I can use now or later, but the only thing is perfect flight times and dates aren't available/my dates aren't totally certain, so I'm hoping to be able to tweak the awards as we get closer to the date of the flight, though I am also happy to use them as is if I really had to.

Then on Aug 2, a better CX flight on the same date, Aug 4, opens up. My understanding from the above quote and the rest of the thread is that I would pay no close-in fee to change to that flight since the new travel date is not within 21 days of the original booking date (even though it is within 21 days from when I make the change)?

Can I change my Aug 4 flight to the new flight on Aug 1 without a fee since it is not within 21 days of the original booking date (even though it is within 21 days from when I make the change on July 25)?
That is, basically you can use last minute award seat availability without paying a close-in fee as long as you already have an award booked more than 21 days before? (Obviously subject to same carrier and origin and destination rules as changing any of that would trigger the $150 fee.)
I have no status on AA and am trying to front-run the 10% rebate going away by booking some awards which I can use now or later, but the only thing is perfect flight times and dates aren't available/my dates aren't totally certain, so I'm hoping to be able to tweak the awards as we get closer to the date of the flight, though I am also happy to use them as is if I really had to.
