AA miles awards: using / redeeming AA miles on Qantas (QF)
The basics:
QF releases their awards from 353 days out to QF FF's and some ffp's (Amadeus CRS). So at the 331 days (~Sabre CRS) AA for award release there are scant seats left. They tend to add more much closer to the day of flight, if there are seats available.
2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: For US flights it has been my recent, but limited experience that QF releases award availability around 10-11 months from departure. Consider searching for one seat in F and one in J as well.
Consider alternate cities. E.g. Flights to BNE might be easier to book with AA miles than SYD or MEL, so adding a segment from BNE might give you a trip denied by connecting in SYD. You might have to remind AA reservationists, because they might not consider BNE.
Consider alternate airlines, such as HA from HNL, TN via PPT, FJ via NAN, etc.
N.B. Travel via Honolulu, or Asia (e.g. HKG or NRT), will require two awards.
aa.com occasionally may report "phantom availability" of premium awards on Qantas.
2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: Conversely, aa.com occasionally may not show available Qantas awards. Use BA's search tool, QF's search tool, or service like ExpertFlyer to see availability. Call in to ticket.
The aa.com oneworld and Other Airline Award Chart may be seen here, for required miles and restrictions on connections.
Note: Reservation speculating, or tying up award space to "flip" in (or out of) Coupon Connection will not be tolerated. If you have an "extra" reservation, simply cancel or refund it. This will not be allowed in this forum either.

BA only shows 3 cabins in output. When searching for award seats, make sure to select 1st class as cabin and it will show premium economy, business and 1st rather than economy, premium economy and business
It only displays flights where there is a seat in at least one cabin. If there is no availability on the flight in any cabin, then the flight will not be displayed.

Does anyone have experience about canceling Qantas premium award (specifically Biz) and it going back into inventory? I've heard Qantas F award space is fairly reliable, but I don't hear much about business.
It's for my parents, looking to do SQ suites and QF F and J. Making myself jealous as those are the top of my to-fly list and to-go destinations.

Based on many people's experience, reported here and elsewhere, that needs to be corrected: when an award booking is cancelled QF sometimes puts the released seats back into redemption availability. It's not something anyone should rely on (although I have the impression that it's highly likely 300+ days out).

Please do not offer or request trading or otherwise speculating in award seats. Such offers will be summarily deleted.
This will not be tolerated outside of The Coupon Connection either.

I got one of those F saver unicorns SYD-DFW the other day on the 388, so they do exist...That thing came out of nowhere when I was just looking for J, and I had to lasso it immediately, lol. It was for many months out, btw.

I'm having HUGE issues booking Qantas F rewards from DXB to SYD/MEL - The AA website shows plenty of availability of flights, but when I click continue on ANY of them, it suddenly changes it and says "The flight you selected is no longer available. Please modify your request."
Of course, I thought this was weird since even Qantas doesn't show this much availability on their OWN website - but still - does this mean QF award tickets on F are not possible to be booked? Date I'm looking at is first week of March, so it's before any changes to redemption rates and such.
Any thoughts?

But they do exist for sure, my DFW-SYD was full in F when I flew on it.

MEL doesn't start when I want to go for holiday, SYD is the only option, but that has NO availability for the first 4 months of next year from what I saw (A380). But I can only travel in late Feb or March anyways, before the damn devaluation too.

The devaluation affects the booking only, travel is good as late as Feb 2017 (if you book March 2016)

The good news is loads of JAL availability in F, no QF or EY though.
