I was hoping it would happen at 11:59pm CST--is it based on the time zone of the passenger who put the flight on hold, rather than AA's server?

It is wherever the itinerary originates. There are a bunch of people who probably are starting off in California (especially on the LAX/SFO redeyes) and those holds will expire in ~40 minutes if not purchased. And it does look like the seat map has been emptying up the past few hours, although the flight remains at Y0.

Precisely the plan, but not much cleared ar midnight CST. However now that midnight PST has passed, lots of seats have opened, incl. a bunch of MCE.

Oh and since lots of seats have been posted, I also added a visual seat map to the wiki.

Are you sure you have 11B? We have a small problem if you do, as I have both 11B (friend) and 11C booked on DFW>ORD #2320.

Anywhere from $260 - $300, depending on where you look.

I booked via Hotels.com, since I had a voucher with them, and only ended up paying $60.

If it wasn't for the voucher I've been wanting to use up and the fact that all the SPG properties at DFW require a shuttle ride, I'd be at the Sheraton.

DFW Westin for me, sans car. I'll cab anywhere to meet up with folks. I'll be flying in from ATL the morning of the 6th and be around all day if anyone wants to head into the city to sight-see, head to Fort Worth, etc.
