Air NZ's mile high pay gap

NZ Herald

Air New Zealand's Shanghai-based flight attendants are paid a quarter the salary of their NZ colleagues - less than the legal minimum wage here.

The Chinese attendants - who work side-by-side with New Zealanders on flights between Auckland and Shanghai - are also paid only a third of the allowances given to their Kiwi counterparts while they are working away from home.

Six Chinese Air NZ flight attendants told the Weekend Herald there had been "growing unhappiness about money issues" among staff.

...
Hardly a new story.

OT: airport hijacker takes bus

NZ Herald

An escaped prisoner hijacked a busload of tourists at Auckland Airport yesterday, pulling the driver from her seat and telling frightened passengers he had a gun.

The man - who escaped during a transfer from Mt Eden Prison to Wanganui Prison - ordered shocked and shaking passengers out of the bus.

Then, in a scene akin to a Hollywood blockbuster, he drove around the corner, jumped from the moving bus and ran away as the driverless vehicle ploughed into a car carrying an Auckland couple and the British relatives they were dropping at the airport.

...
Unlike last time, no first-hand account by me of this hijacking.

Chinese flight attendant battles to return to NZ

NZ Herald

The $530-a-month base salary Crystal Zeng received as an Air New Zealand steward was "miserable", but what was worse for her were the working conditions.

"I remember feeling the pain when I see the others being able to go out to party while we don't even have enough money for movies and McDonald's," she told the Weekend Herald.

"Unlike the Kiwi crew who get cash allowances, what we get is tied to having meals at the hotel and a Chinese restaurant, and if we don't eat at a specific time, we have to go without food. We felt like prisoners in the hotel," said Ms Zeng, who quit the airline last July after nine months.

I wonder if many airlines have different salaries and conditions on expenses like this? Doesn't sound very pleasant at all.

Common practice. Eg QF Jetconnect employees (based in NZ) earn far less than QF employees based in Oz (even if flying the same routes).

Thumbs up Air NZ to add Aussie Flights

Air New Zealand is to increase its flights to Australia from Wellington in response to public demand, and looming competition.

From October 26 there will be an additional weekly service to Melbourne, taking the number of return flights to eight a week.

There would also be another flight to Brisbane, taking the service to six return flights a week. Both services would be operated using Airbus A320 aircraft.

Air New Zealand head of short-haul airlines Bruce Parton said the additional flights were in response to strong demand. "Customers are telling us that they want greater choice in and out of Wellington and we're responding to that."

Longhaul flyers next for fare rise

NZ Herald

Soaring fuel costs mean Air New Zealand long-haul travellers face the prospect of higher fares after a 3 per cent increase in domestic, transtasman and Pacific Island ticket prices.

Air New Zealand's group general manager of short-haul airlines, Bruce Parton, said the airline was not ruling out further price rises if fuel costs did not drop.

"We don't have an indication on what we're likely to do - it's quite complex obviously."

But I know there's nothing I can do about it. Just noticed yesterday that J fares are pricing out about $1,000 USD cheaper on QF on a flight I'm planning for Oct. I do love the BP seat on NZ, but there comes a point where it loses significance to me...

NZ has hiked business class fares a few times in the past 6-12 months. (Each time being hundreds + of dollars.)

Air NZ defends Chinese staff pay

NZ Herald

Air New Zealand has moved to defend the amount paid to Shanghai-based flight attendants.

The Weekend Herald revealed the crew based in China were paid a quarter of their New Zealand colleagues' pay - and also got about a third of the allowances.

When the Herald made its first inquiries into the story last Thursday, a spokeswoman for the airline would only say that the story "includes a number of factual inaccuracies". She refused to clarify and explain what the "factual inaccuracies" were.

Close shaves on Auckland runways

Two separate collisions were narrowly avoided at Auckland International Airport after pilots were wrongly given clearance on a runway others were using.

The first incident occurred on May 29 last year when a Saab SF340A got clearance to line up for takeoff in front of a landing Raytheon 1900D. Both avoided collision.

Say goodbye to queues at Customs

Kiwis flying across the Tasman could soon be getting through airports more quickly with the help of automatic passport-reading machines....
...Customs comptroller Martyn Dunne said New Zealanders had been able to use the SmartGate at Brisbane Airport since late last year and the system would soon be set up in Sydney.

Similar machines would be tested in Wellington in the next few months and he expected the system would be available for all trans-Tasman travel in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup....
