Hijack accused breaks down

The Somali woman charged with hijacking a plane between Blenheim and Christchurch had to be held up by two police officers as she wailed "help me" in court on Friday.

Asha Ali Abdille, 33, allegedly held up the Air New Zealand flight last month, injuring two pilots and a passenger.

Abdille made a brief appearance in the Christchurch District Court on Friday morning....

Reviewing airport security

Timaru Airport authorities will review security measures when they receive the results of a police investigation into an aircraft tampering incident this week. Bethany Marett and NZPA report.

The tampering of a plane in Timaru this week has highlighted the lack of security at Richard Pearse Airport.

While tighter security for passengers departing provincial airports is being considered in the wake of last month's attempted hijacking incident on a Blenheim-Christchurch flight, the aircraft are unsecured overnight on the tarmac at the airports.

The early morning flight from Timaru to Wellington was cancelled on Tuesday after the fuel cap on the plane was found to have been tampered with...

Argggghhhh.

Less than 3 years ago the CEU1Y fare was increased to $9999 - I don't have the fare from before that increase to hand but suspect it was something like $9499 for C and $6999 for Z.

So in the space of 3 years approx 50% increase

It was less than 3 years ago I got SFO for around $4000 in business, now more than 100% increased

A bit of a cheek blaming high fuel prices for increases of more than $1000 at the top end, especially when it was not that long ago they last increased by a considerable sum (in the meantime fuel prices have dipped and now roughly rebounded back to where they were at the last hike).

The Aust Fin Review of 1-2 March has a report (pg 14) about Air NZ with quoted comments by Air NZ Deputy Chairman, Rodger France

"Mr France said.....The cost of jet Kerosene ....at $US115.25 a barrel in Singapore on Thursday..
<snip>
..second half costs were about 82% hedged at at an average price of $US80 a barrel.....Fuel cost for the first half of 2008-09 were hedged about 40% at $US89."

Airlines tell the financial press one thing (how great we are at fuel hedging) but then ramp up the fuel surcharge when the punters looking at the TV news see the oil price rising. Airlines then forget to lower the surcharge when the oil price drops, but the TV news never highlights a drop in oil. No wonder Air NZ & QF profits are rising.

The SQ C2ESQR fare is NZD9899 return AKLLHR - providing SQs new Business on both the 77W and the 380. For the London bound passenger is Business Premier worth over $3,500 more?

The IATA C2 fare return AKLLAX is NZD9472....

Interesting that the Premium Economy fares to the UK have not been raised. Ouch to the rest of the prices though - it may become a struggle to get even PE approved for long haul travel now.

Copied from TV3 NZ news website:

Captured fugitive Nai Yin Xue has been charged with murder after appearing in the Auckland District Court.

The 53-year-old martial arts expert touched down at Auckland International Airport this morning, where he was immediately arrested by police.

He is charged with the murder of his wife Anan Liu, whose body was found in the boot of his car in an Auckland suburb last year.

Xue later abandoned his three-year-old daughter in Melbourne.

The Air New Zealand plane bringing Xue from Los Angeles touched down at Auckland International Airport at 7.20am.

I was on NZ1 today and he was on NZ5 - I wonder which cabin they put him in?

What do you mean getting to the point? It already IS cheaper to fly to Asia in first class than to USA in business class. Then again this might not be for much longer with TG and SQ both changing a/c type in coming months - TG ditching their nice product for the old one, SQ going the other way. But SQ jacking up fares and eliminating awards at the same time

I take your point for NZ departures - from the USA, seems like carriers like NH want around $13k for F LAX-NRT, which is not getting *too* far from J with NZ these days!

Does NZ think that people will continue to cough up the cash for those BP seats as the price keeps going up?

Air NZ pulls out of trade event sponsored by Qantas

NZ Herald

Transtasman airline rivalry has hit new heights, with Air New Zealand pulling out of a major tourism trade event because it isn't being allowed to compete directly with Qantas.

G'day New Zealand Australia Week, organised by Tourism Australia, aims to market Australia to New Zealand's wholesale travel industry.

The event has been running since 2006 and this year for the first time it has tacked on a travel expo day to market Australian tourism direct to the general public. But because Qantas is the key sponsor of the week competing airlines have been blocked from having a stall at the public open day, prompting Air NZ to pull out of the entire event.
