Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:
1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

One Way AKL-YUL: 67,5K Aeroplan and $133 in Taxes and fees per person in J
AKL-BNE (I) with Air NZ
BNE-YVR (I) on 787 with AC
YVR - YUL (I) with AC
Connections are great (2h&1h40). You REALLY need to book the AC flights first, and grab the NZ flights about 6+ weeks later (by calling Aeroplan, can't add flights online to an existing ticket). Yes, there is a $75 per person fee but the beauty is that you get a refund on taxes (go figure...)
And the funny part if that the original BNE-YUL flight cost me 160K Aeroplans for two. However when the AKL-BNE flight came out and I was looking at it through the Aeroplan app (to figure out taxes) I noticed that it was listed at 135K Aeroplan in J for two. Probably a bug. But Aeroplan were fair enough to refund me the 25K difference (I sent them a picture of what the app displayed).
