Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

First time booking using aeroplan as I will be transferring points over from Amex.

I know surchages are high for LH but is this ok?
Depends what you mean by ok. If you want to get there as quickly as possible, then that's what it will cost (using AP at least - UA MP would be a fraction of that: 80k points + US$39.40 for a Saver Award; a lot more points, 175k, for a regular award). If you want to save points with AP, you have to look for flights on airlines that don't involve YQ through AP. Jerry has a good thread on this (for the TATL portion):

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-c...demptions.html

Otherwise, that's what you can expect to pay flying on a J award with LH.

Thanks Marlin for detailed reply, unfortunately I am handicapped to use aeroplan only as amex points only go to this airline for one way ticket as there is no option to go to india. As you stated I am booking another ticket using united miles on lufthansa as I have enough to cover it... I think I need to take a hit this time and buy using aeroplan.

I will checkout the other thread you posted hoping it can give me some pointers to save cash.

Hi Uday,

If you bought one ticket on AP and the other on UA MP, you're at least better off than having booked both on AP (financially speaking that is). Sounds to me like you did pretty well considering the circumstances.

In any case, having done a quick search, I don't think you'll find anything more convenient - to avoid YQ on AP, you'd probably have to fly at inconvenient times, 2 or more stops, etc. Avoiding YQ often leads to more complicated and considerably longer itineraries, a result which might not be an option for some, whether by choice or circumstances.

Aeroplan seems to not charge YQ on flights to TYO. Unfortunately, when a stopover is made in TYO and destination is, let's say, SYD; YQ is being charged.

JAL and ANA dropped YQ earlier this year. AC is reacting to competitive pressure so no YQ for TYO as destination.

This is not new. Aeroplan charges origin to destination YQ. Had Hong Kong been your destination Tokyo would still be a low YQ stopover
