Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

It's about half the YQ if you book as two one ways. Just looked up a random day for BNE - YVR and found YQ of $15 on AC.

Sorry for not mentioning. All flights are AC. Feb/Mar 2017

The challenge certainly was finding 4 J seats on the same flights TPAC. But it is do-able.

Aeroplan continues to be such a scam... I am more convinced than ever that it is literally programmed to simply order routings by most YQ!

I selected JNB-YVR (in First/Business) on my date and it proposed:
JNB-ADD (ET J)
ADD-FRA (ET J)
FRA-YVR (LH Y) ... $241.50/pax

I phoned in, and booked this (on the same date):
JNB-ADD (ET J)
ADD-YYZ (ET J)
YYZ-YVR (AC J) ... $54.62/pax

Was also able to argue successfully to waive the telephone booking fee given that it's a legal routing in all J that should have easily been available on the website.

Wow, so the website would not show the simple ET routing via YYZ and insisted you fly LH Y, just so AC can collect $200 of scamcharge.

That is low, even for the AE/AC algorithm to scam people by preferring AC over the water, even if in Y

The strange thing I've noticed is that the AP site seems to prioritize UA F awards over LH F.

For instance, I couldn't get FRA-EWR LH F space to show on the AP website even though UA and NH displayed availability on their website. All the F options were on UA. Called in and got the seat I needed in the end.

One way 107,500 miles

YYZ - ORD (UA J) 17 hour overnight
ORD - NRT (NH F)
NRT - BKK (TG F)

$461.46 (OUCH) plus booking fee.

Return one way 75,000 miles

HKG - HND (NH J) 22 hour overnight
HND - YYZ (AC J)
YYZ - YXU (AC Y)

$55.52 plus booking fee.

Could have saved over $300 if I just flew into HKG instead of BKK but I really wanted to try that A380 lol. You only live once.

Asiana has A380 on ICN-HKG I think, or why not fly to SIN (may luck out on the unlikely release of SQ A380 NRT-SIN)

Just pray you don't get TGed, and have that A380 swapped out on you as TG lives shuffling its aircraft around.

A380 is often available on HKG-SIN in SQ J as well.

I'd say the best A380 F product available with Aeroplan has to be with LH. If you do that ex-HKG you'll save quite a bit in YQ.

Bah, I wimped out on the first flight to gain a couple extra days on my trip and to lower the cost Plus would much rather arrive mid day.

YYZ - YUL (AC J)
YUL - IST (TK J) 10 hour connection
IST - BKK (TK J)

$77.86

SFO-IAH UA J (789, but my goal is to change to a later flight, as a 6am departure followed by 9 hours in IAH isn't exactly spectacular - although they are opening a Centurion lounge there "in 2016")
IAH-IST TK J
IST-ZRH TK J

$30 phone booking fee plus $14.60 in taxes/fees.

ATH-IST TK J
IST-LAX TK J
LAX-SFO UA Y (yuck - but better to get a placeholder in now)

$30 phone booking fee plus $99.40 in taxes/fees.

None of these are set in stone, but given my dates are somewhat fixed, I was thrilled to be able to book this as is.

I would like to try TK J, but LH F will win if it opens up in either direction. SFO-IST or IST-SFO would also beat out the IAH/LAX connections, if those flights open up.

DPS-TPE BR Y
TPE-YYZ BR J
YYZ-YZR AC Y

$58.82 + 77500 Aeroplan Miles per adult + $100 for infant ticket.

Hoping J will open up on DPS-TPE segment.

Interestingly the return was cheaper in taxes and booking fees than our flights to Bali.

YYZ-HKG CX J
HKG-DPS CX J

90.20USD + 50000 Alaska Miles per person.

nice. not used to seeing that kind of YQ attached to LH. love those anti-YQ laws.
