Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Brazil has outlawed YQ. Simple as that.

Strangely enough, one option I looked at earlier was GIG-FRA-BKK-HKG, with the latter two in TG F and there was $400 or so in YQ which sounds illegal to me?

HKG also has a similar rule but it seems to only apply to the ex-HKG segment - and I confirmed it is the case through pricing out revenue tickets on ITA Matrix. I recently flew HKG-FRA-EWR and there wasn't YQ on the HKG-FRA segment in LH F, but there was about $250 of it for the FRA-EWR segment.

Booked YYZ-IST (stop 3 days) IST-MRU (stop 2 weeks) MRU-IST-YYZ
All in TK J.
Cost 150,000 miles + CAD$183.36 each.

What I really liked, is that I was able to get 4 J seats on each of the flights. ^ I was expecting to maybe only get 2 reward tickets and pay cash for the other 2.

Even after booking the 4 tickets, I went back and did another search on the same dates, and was getting as many as 6 more J seats available. I'm not sure if that's some sort of error or phantom availability, but the 4 seats that I booked ticketed just fine.

Booked it for May 2017, so nearly the full 355 day booking window out. Had been watching availability for a while, waiting for it to open for booking. Wanted early May travel dates, so as to visit Istanbul while their weather was still moderate before summer, and to hit Mauritius after their summer and rainy season.

Also interesting that searching MRU-IST had tons of availability on every flight. IST-YYZ had availability on most days in the month. On some days where IST-YYZ was not available, MRU-IST-YYZ was, opening up the YYZ segment only when booked with the MRU flight. I'm glad I searched that way, because I've developed the habit over the years of searching segment-by-segment. Had I only done that, I might not have seen the IST-YYZ opening.

Lots of availability as well on the newish IST-MRU-TNR route. Just too bad TK doesn't have rights to carry between MRU and TNR, as that would have made a great side-trip to see the in-laws for little extra cost.

YYJ-YVR-BNE for dates in November, I can purchase flights from Air Canada for $916.11 while the fees and surcharges for an AP flight same dates and flights, is $860.16.

So for 90,000 miles, I'm saving $55.95 - not a very good use of miles!

IAH - BLR - Dec 7th - 75k + 512USD

First time booking using aeroplan as I will be transferring points over from Amex.

I know surchages are high for LH but is this ok?
