FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: jc94
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition, 2016 edition and 2017 edition

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply here as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

I certainly was, as a child/teenager. Lots of free time to cultivate some level of talent. Too bad I wasn't a 9-year-old Super Elite though!

That's where my mail and boarding passes need to go. Do I have a large pile?

Maybe hand them out when you get less than exceptional service from AC staff/concierges. I would love to see the expression on their faces. Nothing like giving back.

If Canada collectively gets off our assessment and defends our territory around Machias Seal Island, do you think we will just give back the invaders, or hold them on immigration and weapons charges?

A recruiter from a US big 5 tech company sent me an email today, offering me a trip to their HQ to discuss a intermediate level software developer position.

This leaves me wondering: How much resources do US big 5 spend on technical talent acquisition? Can the spending be justified, or is it just a bubble?

On the other hand, as a person with recruiting responsibilities myself, I think Canadian tech companies should really step up the game to keep talents from going to US.

@songsc : generally, IME, Canadian companies underspend on talent. Recruitment, retention, training.

But outside recruiters generally get what, 25-50% an annual salary for a hired on employee? If they are flying you in, its pretty far down the funnel you are. $2-3k to wow you isn't much.

Exactly. The cost to bring a candidate on site for an interview is primarily the time taken away from other engineers to conduct the interview. Flights, hotels, meals, etc., are cheap in comparison.

Totally agree that Canadian companies underspend on talent. The most I have done is to invite selected candidate out for lunch when we really need this candidate onboard, and this candidate is having other interviews/offers. It is also an opportunity for us to if the candidate has cultural fit with the rest of the team.

And no, I am not that far down the funnel. I am not even looking for jobs at this moment, and this is just for an intermediate level engineer position, so their offer to fly me in did surprise me a bit.

If so then why don't Canadian companies step up the game?

Because Canadian companies place much lower value on employee time, which is why they'd rather waste 4 hours x 3 interviewers than pay for a $500 plane ticket, a $300 hotel bill and a couple of meals.

My old, old boss would be so worried about hiring someone that wanted 10% more but was twice as good as the other candidate. I think I learn the most management skills watching other people's mistakes .

Also interesting that so many companies spend so much on recruiting, but pretty much nothing on employee retention.

I've seen this too. Even when half the cost of the employee is the overhead, so it's really only increasing your cost by 5% to give them 10% more money.

I've also seen failures in that department.

I had a company scrap an employee bonus scheme so they could to reinvest it in training. You can imagine how well that worked for them.
