AC ignores multiple SFO ATC go around orders Oct22

from nickflightz at airliners.net
http://www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1376943

ACA781 was on final at SFO when the tower instructed him to go around at least 5 times and they still landed.

Audio from tower:
https://soundcloud.com/user-771239359/oct-23-2017-0400z

from http://avherald.com/h?article=4b016414&opt=1

As result tower instructed "Air Canada seven eighty one, go around", silence for 2 seconds, tower repeated ""Air Canada seven eighty one, go around", again silence. In total the tower transmitted 5 instructions "Air Canada seven eighty one, go around", however did not receive any response, the aircraft continued the landing.

They really aren't making a good case for themselves at SFO.

They claim they did not hear this because of problems with their radio. The tower must have been aware that they did not get the instructions.

As the plane got closer to landing, a tower supervisor used a red light gun to alert the crew to abort the landing. A flashing light gun is “standard protocol” when an air crew is not responding to radio instructions, (FAA spokesman) Gregor said.

However, despite all those attempts to abort the landing, the Air Canada plane still landed on Runway 28R at 9:26 p.m., Gregor said.

ACA and TSB has lot of explaining to do. Two at SFO, one in India in recent weeks.

They shouldn't have ignored the visual warning by ATC, even if all comms were down.

The India event was hardy AC's fault IIRC.

Maybe this is a new thing. They are practicing their hard landings.

Send SFO tower a 5% discount code for non working radio. Problem solved.

Probably just a coincidence, but another issue with an ACA flight into SFO in the evening originating in an Eastern time zone.

Or a culture of excusing bad pilot behaviour

There are unanswered questions as other pilots noted, some very simple. Not a single update since the story broke.

Are you still referring to the India ATC incident?

What kind of "update" are you looking for?

Here's something to read

https://www.bangaloreaviation.com/20...da-flight.html

Additional "perspective" from some pilots and ATC guys here. Read what they have to say about flying in India.

In the case of AC781 in SFO, I think a listen to the CVR would have been interesting.

I have no evidence to support this, so take it for what it's worth:

I am virtually certain that Air Canada (again) allowed the plane to fly the next day and "accidently" overwrote the CVR. So we will never hear it.
