BTW, the SQ A313s do not have PTVs..

But PTVS will be useful for AC's wide body fleet. B763ERs, A333s, A343s... But I think right now will not be the time suggest them to Empress...

So you are suggesting that AC should go blow loads of money and put PTVs on planes such as A320s when they usually fly on routes that aren't even long enough for a movie?
Why don't you take some time and look at the % of international flights that SQ, VS, CX, SK does versus AC.
Is it a good idea for the long haul aircrafts? Sure. Is it a priority? Absolutely not.

I do agree with Empress. Right now it is not a good idea to put them. On their new Wide body aircrafts, yes. But on their older aircraft... I think AC has other priorities... Like turning itself around.. But if they turn around (which I hope they do), I will not be surprised if they put in PTVs on AC's A333s, A343s and some of their B763ERs...

I do agree that AC will likely need aircraft to replace the B747-400s. But will the A340-600 be required or could they look at smaller aircraft like More A340-500 or some used A340-300s. Boeing does have some A340-300s (from SQ) that they will like to place with airlines. So far Belgium Universal Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines have show interest in those used a340-300s. There was a time, AC was interested in acquiring them, but they shied away for some reason...
Considering the aviation market, it will be a tough call to acquire more newer aircraft. But at the same time, leasing companies will not mind leasing aircraft like the a340-600s or the A340-500s to airlines...</font>

Like I said, I think Airbus wants to push high and low with Air Canada - the middle will sort itself out soon enough. The price guarantees on much of the Airbus product will start to expire in another year or two, which means Air Canada can pick up deals or Airbus will be putting soft money into deals to keep resale values high.

MSN,
I think Boeing will likely be happy. After all Boeing threw a fit when IB went with Airbus...
But 2003 will likely not be a great year for aviation sales. As a result AC could get good prices.. But again AC has huge debts to pay.... Can they afford to?

I would just like to see AC play movies on the mainscreen period. YWG-YYZ is about 2.20 minutes give or take. Enough time to play a 80-90 minute movie. YQR-YYZ is about 3 hrs. I don't need to watch EBL Raymond and stupid short films, or the news in english and french (why can't there be two channels of audio so it only plays once?) Just play a movie. Royal used to, C3000 managed to do it, people liked it , stayed out of the aisles, drank less, and were otherwise occupied.

Oh, I would like to be running that corner of Air Canada right now. While I would prefer to take 777's, commonality and all that jazz means that Airbus is in the zone - by being a real hard head on some of the "non compete" routes, the 340's or 777's would be money spinners. In fact, absent the latest touches at Airbus, I think I would go with 777's and lock in Boeing on a swap-out to be the launch customer for the 7E7.

I do personally prefer the Airbus for long haul travel.. Especially in J and Y class.
I do think AC does not need too many large planes. I am sure with the delays of deliveries with the manufacturers, AC should be able to secure delivery slots with either of the manufacturers.
I would think more A340-600s and A340-500s will likely be the aircraft needed. I had heard about a plan from RM released early last year. It considted of AC purchasing 10 A345s and 10 A346s with their existing A343s, A333s and B763ERs.

While it hurts Boeing to have these A343's sitting around, it hurts more to lose sales of new Boeing metal.
Long term, Boeing is a cheaper ride, and most folks know that. Two engines less to maintain, and the whole nine yards.
Right now, production planners at Airbus are looking at their run and it is not so pretty - which is why I say the A340-600's will be a hot property to land on someone's doorstep. The pricing is excellent, and given the Canadian market, they are a safe place to put them looking forward.

Didn't Empress just tell us that AC was pulling a 747 Combi out of the desert and putting it back in service??? Now they are looking to get rid of the 747 Combi's?
A year or so back I had heard from a reliable source that AC was very close to signing a deal with Boeing for 777's. Not sure of how many etc, just that they were close to a deal. Didn't make sense at the time because of AC'' commitment to the A330/A340 program. Not sure it would make sense now.
Does anyone know if AC has taken all of the long range B767's that were on order?

Has anything been said about deferring delivery of the planes on order? Seems to me they already have more planes than they need. Especially 319's and 320's.

It also depends on what ZIP intends to do. I am quite sure there's a clause in the current contract staing that the aircrafts that ZIP operates cannot have a take off weight that exceeds 737-700.
