A330-300 Fleet Overview

AC currently has two configurations of 333:
  • Dream Cabin (16 aircraft): Latest 3-class configuration in line with the 787 and 777 fleets (seat map)
  • The "Merlions" (2 aircraft): ex-Singapore Airlines 2-class configuration (seat map), which are expected to be reconfigured to the Dream Cabin.
    • Important note: the front cabin on these aircraft is an angle-flat product in a 2-2-2 layout that was SQ's "regional" business class. On flights within North America, AC sells it as J; on international flights, they sell it as PY. These aircraft do not have the standard AC PY cabin
    • Since October 2023, these aircraft primarily operate YYZ>BOG>YUL triangle, and YUL<>LAX.

I second the comment that the key is configuration. I'd much rather be on a DL MD-80 than a new UA/AA A32x/B73x.

The third of the four TAP aircraft has arrived in Canada. Formerly CS-TOW, MSN 1012 was imported on paper as C-GEGI (AC Fin 941?) this past Wednesday 11th, and landed in YVR directly from LIS operating as AC 2317 on Saturday evening.

It’s currently sporting the bland Star Alliance livery (sadly not its previous colourful Portugal Stopover scheme) and has a pair of Air Canada decals slapped on the forward fuselage, but my understanding is that it will ferry out to HND for paint (and interior refurb?) on Sunday or Monday.

Wow. Non-stop from LIS.

That would have saved me a lot of flying next week...

Of it goes to HND.
Not sure why they didn't go LIS-HND.

I’m guessing here, but maybe the vagaries of importation obligation and/or taxes? Kinda like back in the day when Qantas used to accept their brand new B744s in YXX, which excited a lot of local berry farmers dreaming of nonstop Australia service. It was swarmed by AC maintenance vehicles overnight, so perhaps it made sense for a tech pitstop prior to delivery to the paint shop.

Is a new paint job really required? The Star Alliance livery looks nice enough to me

Can AC save the cost of paint job and stock the Cafe with more Lindt instead?
monkai, 24left, smallmj and 1 others like this.

also I think it takes a month to do the MODs, this would be better staying here to cover off for the 737Max shortage.

If it is swarmed with maintenance trucks perhaps there some type of receiving inspection that also happens, If there is something wrong it is likely easier to identify that before it is handled off to a third party maintenance organisation to modify.

I would imagine you are correct. At minimum it gives a chain of control should a defect be found after purchase.

Yes, absolutely. No doubt there was some sort of inspection on the Lisbon end, but any items to address would best be accomplished with the resources here at home.
As for third-party modification in Japan, I'm not sure if the interior is being configured, or it's simply being painted, or both.

It's already had the new paint job, it was carrying the special Portugal stopover livery and was repainted for Air Canada in the STAR ALLIANCE colours with black engines. It's not going to be repainted again so far as I know, it's likely still got wet paint in some place (joke - back off pedants ! )

333 Woes

I have an upcoming trip with a domestic trans-con leg on a 333. AC seatmap gives me one of the Lions, but Plusgrade and the AC booking engine thinks it's a regular 333 with 3 cabins. The pessimistic part of me says this is an IT fail and it is indeed a Lion without signature service. Any way to tell for sure, or is the seat map always right?

I don't think there is a way to tell. The set of flights I booked last month started out with a YYZ-YVR transcon on a 77W (in PE) and a YYC-YYZ transcon on one of the Lions (in J). But on the mobile app the YYZ-YVR leg showed up as 333 with only J and Y. The website continued to show the 77W until I received a sched change by e-mail a week later.
Last week I got another sched change with the 333 on the YYC-YYZ leg changed to a 77L. Website did indeed show 77L at that point, but in the mobile app it kept showing up as a 333 until a couple of days ago.
