Cabin Layout
Interior Specs can be found here https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/fly/onboard/fleet.html
- Window seats may feel narrower to come as the armrests are placed "into" the "curvature" of the cabin.
- Seats with no windows feel even more narrower as there is no space created by the curvature of window.
- All bulkhead seats have very limited legroom.
- Seats 15A, 16A, 16F, 17A and 17F have limited windows.
- Exit rows 19 and 20 have more legroom than regular preferred seats.
Routes
The 737 MAX is designated to replace the A320-series. Based on announcements and schedule updates, the following specific routes will be operated by the 737 MAX in future:
YYZ-LAX (periodic flights)
YYZ-SNN (new route)
YUL-DUB (new route)
YYZ/YUL-KEF (replacing Rouge A319)
YYT-LHR (replacing Mainline A319)
YHZ-LHR (replacing Mainline B767)
Hawaii Routes YVR/YYC (replacing Rouge B767)
Many domestic trunk routes (YYZ, YVR, YUL, YYC) now operated by 7M8, replacing A320 family

Tongue in cheek.
Point being, if they could, they probably would.
I guess AC finally discovered that people enjoy being treated like ***. Makes them feel they must indeed have found the absolute best deal...

People can relax now. Apparently you can fit a 17.8" Y seat on the Max.

The 737 classic and NG always had very think wall structure with deep window wells, at least the 737 window wells were deeper than both airbus, Embraer, and Canadair comparables. The additional space could come from putting the walls on a diet through use of advanced metal materials.
I don't think giving the walls a diet will totally accomplish the task. Another piece of information is specific to Southwest. Southwest doe not use gallery carts to hand out food and drink. Instead FA walk the aisles, take pax requests, and then handout F&B from handheld baskets. It is entirely possible that SW could implement wider seats by shrinking the aisle., even by 1/2 inch. If so, then AC and other airlines that require use of galley carts would not be able to use the 17.8" seats.

The tube diameter is not changing on the 737max, so to be able to fit 17.8" seats something on the inside has to change.

If galley carts were that big of a concern, they could just design new ones slightly more narrow than the existing ones. Even if they went to the Transport Canada legal minimum of 15" aisle width they could probably fit some sort of cart - and it isn't like AC will need lots of food cart capacity anyways

The maxjet is still a couple years away and no one knows what type of new seat technology may come on the market between now and then. Very few saw the slimline recaro seats coming.
Nevermind AC could just make the aisle wider/narrower or as others mentioned the wall thickeness/gap can eat into the seat width.
As the country's population is getting older they should be looking to maintain seat comfort and 18'' (45.72 cm) should be the minimum in Y.
