A pleasant experience.Booked NH F/J redemption from EU to Asia at 75k.Called through Skype to US toll free number and they transferred to Greece.Checked the taxes and fees from ITA Matrix.Total was 195€ incl.phone fee and YQ.Only thing that sucks is that you can do only one transfer with basic points.

Hello fellow A3-members,

I just got off the phone with the UK hotline. I am looking to book MUC - SFO oneway in economy on 9/28 or 9/29, unfortunately this doesn't seem to be available. FRA - SFO via LHR was available, however, with LH/UA. They quoted me 30.000 miles and 235 Eur?

Any opinion on whether this is correct and a good value for redeeming?
Also, thoughts on optimizing this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
FTDDD

I feel that any long distance flight such as this is always a good deal instead of intra Europe redemptions.

Most of the E235 is going to be UK passenger duty. Try to avoid LHR to eliminate this. Have you checked LOT via WAW?

If you mean APD, the UK departure tax, this is not charged on transits of <24 hours. However, German taxes aren't far behind!

Except in fairly specific circumstances (last minute booking, absolute peak rate times), TATL Y bookings are terrible value and should be avoided because most of the fare is tax, which still has to be paid.

Thanks NWI, it is in fact absolute peak time - Oktoberfest in Munich.

I'm assuming that itinerary would be subject to German taxes then?
Haven't checked WAW yet, thanks for the idea.

Any loopholes here? Do we have an overview of lowest taxes on redemptions somewhere?

Thanks!

No loopholes out of Europe, except to minimise taxes - but minimising is all you're doing, not virtually eliminating.

You need to look at options out of low departure tax cities/airports - Paris and Brussels can sometimes work well for Star, and Dublin as well but there's less flights from there to find availability on. Be prepared to pay for a cheap positioning flight to get the long haul availability.

However, peak fare times from Europe to the USA are not usually September - you can normally find a paid Y fare in the €600 or less region from somewhere. July and (strangely) October seem to be months when there aren't deals around.

My advice - pay a revenue fare and save your miles for a business class redemption in the future.

Just called in to book a star alliance redemption for Air Canada flights, and they said their star alliance system is down, and they are unable to look up availability to book the tickets. Basically said (in a polite fashion), try again tomorrow.

Any way around this? Are they able to direct book or do anything else if the system is down? Normally I would wait, but the flights are in a couple days...

Thanks!

I think you have to wait, as I believe they have no possibility to help you without their *A booking systems online. Try again at the earliest possible time tomorrow, if they're already closed for today.

Thanks, I thought that would be the case.

Also, they are apparently open 24/7 so I'll try again in a couple hours in hopes that they have the star alliance system back online.

They're open 24/7? Maybe I'll give them a call, I always thought I had to call at an odd hour in the night.

Trying to book 2 one ways within CONUS, should be 12.5K x 2. Taxes shouldn't be bad seeing that the redemption is purely within the U.S and would be on UA, correct?

So far as I'm aware, redemption bookings need to be made through the M&B department, not the general sales line (which is 24/7). M&B has limited hours and closes at 5pm Greek time.
