Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade

Still, I like the Sofitel in Lisbon: central location, excellent service, small but elegant rooms.
Inspira Santa Marta is an excellent alternative: more creative design and restaurant, central location, and pretty cheap.

Our friends stayed at hotel 2 weeks ago. They did not have any status, so got a room on lower floor and small. They complained and got a slightly better room. They booked thru Qantas. From our experience, booking with QF or BA we did not get good rooms. So, now we just booked directly with hotels.

But I see that hotels in Lisbon are today generally very cheap.
A perfectly adequate Ibis with new bedding starts with 39 euros + 12 euros for a buffet breakfast for two. That is a difference of about 300%. And the Sofitel does not even have a lounge.
I realize Sofitel is nicer and the breakfast is better, but I think I will be fine with the Ibis breakfast as well. If the Sofitel had a lounge I might go for it but I currently have trouble to justify it to myself. After all, you can do a lot with a saving of 120 euros per day.
Is the Sofitel really so much nicer that I should reconsider?

Still, there are numerous very good hotels in Lisbon (some of them may be cheaper than Sofitel, even if Sofitel is generally very cheap).
My favourite is Inspira Santa Maria: very nice design, pleasant restaurant, very central location. Excellent value.
I also like Altis Belem (not the most central place, but superb contemporary building with great view over the river).
Bairro Alto has excellent location, but overpriced for what you get. Still very pleasant breakfast and bar.
Ritz Four Seasons : excellent service and spa. Comfortable but very classic rooms.

- Upon request (wouldn't have happened otherwise) upgraded from King Deluxe to Junior Suite, which is essentially two rooms joined together (incl. 2 bathrooms).
- Welcome drink of white or red port (I chose white). Ordered a second glass because it was so good and they said it was on the house.
- Nice welcome gift of a plate of sweets
- Turn-down service with a replenishment of bottled water, espresso capsules, and the standard service (blinds closed, chocolate on nightstand, etc.).
- The front desk staff were almost too nice but not superficially so.
Despite a 1-hour power outage (a 30-min outage was posted at the front desk and elevators) and aging/worn furniture, I've really enjoyed my short stay would would certainly return.

Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade
Here is my review of an excellent 2 night-stay in Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade with a great spring weather in town.

The hotel is located on one of the most emblematic avenue of Lisbon : avenida da Liberdade, very centrally located and walking distance from all touristic sites. There is a metro station (Avenida) just in front of the entrance (it cannot be closer !). You can easily reach the airport with the metro with only 1 change, but Uber was so cheap (Euros 8) that the choice was very easy.
There is no lounge in this hotel.
Check In
As a French person, traveling to Portugal is always nice as almost everyone speaks very good French there, so you can travel lazy :-). Of course at theSofitel, this was even more the case and all the staff spoke to me in perfect French. Even the hand-written welcome note from the (Portuguese) GM was in French.
This is another Accor hotel where the slogan "Feel welcome" means something. I was indeed very kindly welcomed and acknowledged as a Platinum member, and I was clearly expected. I was spontaneously upgraded from Superior to Luxury. The room was facingthe avenue. I was accompanied to my room and I was given another welcome letter explaining the platinum benefits:
- welcome drink (valid for beer, wine and of course port wine !!)
- room upgrade
- VIP treatment = plate of pastries
- newspaper in room everyday (a French newspaper was already in my room when I arrived)
- late check-out (I asked for a 4 pm one and it was no problem)
- free wifi (but it's free for everybody)
They also gave me another voucher which entitle you to have a free bottle of Portuguese wine if you have dinner at the hotel restaurant (Ad Lib)
Room
The Luxury room was not huge in size but largeenough for me. Espresso machine available and the usual amenities. Nice modern bathroom with plenty of Hermes products ;-)

Some aspects of the decoration are a bit dated but the room was still in very good condition. The hotel has apparently started a renovation, as per this note that was placed on the desk.

Dining
The restaurant Ad Lib where I had an excellent dinner

The bar, to enjoy a delicious Port wine glass

The breakfast is taken in a windowlessunderground room (which I haven't seen as I didn't have breakfast).
Service
Turndown service was provided every evening. Chocolates and water were given.
Overall
Overall, a very good stay with good Platinum recognition (despite a close-to-fully booked hotel with only the room category I booked that was available on the day of my arrival, they upgraded me).
I recommend this hotel, without hesitation, if you go to Lisboneither for work or pleasure.

Overall Very good stay. Feel welcome there !
