The more important question which was touched on by mentioning a stopover should not count if all you did was land at the airport.

I'd like to see a good definition of what it really means to have been somewhere?
....
We drove a little out of the way to visit a few extra New England states last year and a friend in Boston told me his definition required that you took a pee in the state or the visit doesn't count.
....
I think it is best to have a list of countries you have had a sufficient experience in to culturally count as a visit, and another list that you have only technically visited.

Good points.

I am 100% sure I have peed in all the countries I have visited! ALL the visits were lengthy enough to have required peeing. My shortest stays were in Tangiers (day ferry from Tarifa, Spain) and Helsinki (overnight ferry from Stockholm) -- around eight hours each. All other visits were days, weeks, or months in each country.

I almost didn't bother, my list is so short:

Canada
Mexico
Japan
South Korea
Philippines

But I did do a stop-over on Wake Island, and spent a year on Okinawa, if that counts. I've also visited 37 states including Alaska and Hawaii (not counting transit stops).

(Edited to update state listing)

I did an inventory of the US states (+ D.C.) that I have visited, and the total (depending on the definition of "visit") is only about 36 of 51.

Some of the ones that I DON'T count include:

Connecticut and Rhode Island. Well, I THINK I passed through both of these on a train between NYC and Boston many years ago. But just passing through doesn't count, does it?

New Jersey. I have had numerous near misses (or more properly "near hits") on this one. I once accidentally drove into NJ on the Jersey Turnpike while on a business trip to Philly. I have also passed through NJ many times on train rides between Philly and NYC. And finally, I once took a ferryboat across the Delaware River from Philly to Camden, NJ, but did NOT disembark in Camden. (Not even to visit the Aquarium -- never mind visiting Camden! ) So even though I was undoubtedly on the NJ side of the river, I don't think that counts either.

And one that I DO count is:

Kentucky. Yeah, I visited Cincinnati on business. The airport is in Covington, Kentucky. THAT doesn't count as a visit to KY. But on the weekend I took a little tour around Cincy and Covington. I seem to recall visiting a Catholic church/cathedral in Covington that is supposed to resemble Notre Dame in Paris. I even purchased something in the gift shop there! Since I actually did some sightseeing, I think that counts. Barely. So KY is on my list.

Hmmm... not in alphabetical order mind..got nothing to do for 10 mins - so here is my list excluding other parts of the UK and those places now back in China:

UK, Ireland, France (and Monaco), Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, Spain, Portugal, Italy (and Vatican City), Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, India, Nepal, South Africa, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, China, Taiwan, Mongolia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Cook Islands, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolvia and Argentina. So that's 61 real places excluding the country I was born in.

If anyone doubts me, my grandma has all the postcards filed in sequential order.

What a fun thread! Thanks for starting it, Oz!

I looked at this as an op to figure out where I've been - never really thought of it before - so maybe I may better know where I'm going!

Also the reason I added the states and am probably way too descriptive.

Amsterdam (Canals area)
Canada (Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler)
Costa Rica (San Jose, Tamarindo)
Germany (3x Ramstein, Castle Route)
Ireland (2x all over)
Jamaica (Sandals)
Mexico (20x+ all over)
Thailand (Samui)
Tahiti (Moorea)
UK / N. Ireland (3x London / Belfast, Carrickmore)
USA
- Alabama (Gulf Shores)
- Arizona (10x+ all over)
- California (live here, all over!)
- Florida (2x Keys, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Pensacola)
- Hawaii (2x Kauai, Maui, Oahu)
- Illinois (Chicago)
- Mississippi (2x Biloxi, New Orleans)
- Nevada (10x+ Vegas, Laughlin, Reno)
- New York (2x NYC)
- Ohio (2x Cleveland)
- Texas (3x Amarillo, Austin, Dallas)
- Utah (Snowbird)
- Virginia (2x Arlington, Virginia Bch)
- Washington (2x Seattle)
- Wash DC (Natl Archives)

Thanks again Oz, I had fun doing this!
