Some very impressive travelers here! But alas no surprise that this thread mostly ground to a halt during the pandemic shutdowns.
I saw a post where someone said their objective was to visit as many countries as their age. I like that concept - I'm a little behind right now but it's definitely feasible once I retire, which hopefully is not too far off. My grandma lived to 104...

while Covid definitely slowed it, the influencer and social media world has greatly accelerated it. I’m most curious how this is changing places that almost never saw a “tourist” before.

90 countries so far (this site counts Guam, Puerto Rico, Scotland, and US VI as separate countries, and I don't).
I use this list for tally: https://www.worldometers.info/geogra...-of-countries/

In chronological order:
Indonesia (born)
USA (2005)
China (+Hong Kong) (2017)
Japan (2017)
Thailand (2018)
South Korea (2018)
Azerbaijan (2021; first solo travel destination)
Turkiye (2021)
Kyrgyzstan (2022)
Uzbekistan (2022)
Kazakhstan (2022)
Was called crazy by an Australian traveler who have visited 70+ countries when I told him that Kazakhstan was my 11th country
Europe trip next year should inflate the list a bit

I'm going to play devil's advocate on this thread and say that I despise "counting countries". I used to love knowing that I'd been to XX number of countries, but the more I've traveled, the older I've become, and the more people I meet, I realize that it is the worst motivation for traveling and for several reasons. I hate to come off as negative because that is not at all who I am, but I truly believe counting countries is a completely meaningless statistic, yet people LOVE to harp on it. I'm also curious to hear if others agree as it's something I've been thinking about for quite some time now.
By all means, know your count and it's for sure a fun thing to keep track of. I have a push pin map that I can't wait to update when I get home from trips. My only point here is that "counting countries" should not be THE motivation for a trip and I think that in far too many cases, especially with the rise of Instagram/social media, it has become so.
1) I have met countless people who have been to a huge amount of countries, but have only visited most of them via cruise or an extended layover where they saw a very tiny area for a few hours. Great, you've stepped foot into that country but you haven't seen or experienced anything. Those same people always seem to have big opinions on the countries that they've seen a slimmer of.
2) The motivation to travel should be to explore, learn about new places, embrace new cultures, etc. You are not doing any of that by stepping foot into a port with sales carts and then going back onto the cruise, or leaving the airport to take a picture of a site and heading straight back to the airport.
3) Nobody actually cares how many countries you've been to. They may be amazed at how well traveled you are and interested in some of your stories, but no one actually cares. It's similar to hearing about someone's dreams or fantasy football team.
4) The original reason I've developed these feelings - I have a good friend who claims he loves Central America. He has been to Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua and Guatemala and he does at least one trip to the region each year. The way he talks about his trips had always made me think he was an expert on these countries. It wasn't until I had some questions about a trip for myself that I found out he flies in and heads directly to a resort in each of those countries (and always the same resort). He hasn't seen anything outside of those resorts, seen any historical sites, or eaten any local food off property. Yet he would gladly post his country count in this thread and boast that he's "seen" all of Central America outside of H. and El.

This thread discusses countries. Anyway, it's all good - people count how they count. It doesn't matter to me... maybe I'll keep 2 counts, one for countries, and one for territories. Are you a TCC dues paying member?

Never heard of the TCC. Looked it up and it appears they count territories, not countries. "TCC’s official list of 330 territories..."

- 193 UN Members
- UN+ List - there's no one recognized list, but most people put this at 196-200 almost everyone includes the Vatican (chooses not to join UN), Kosovo (recognized by well over half of the UN), Palestine (recognized by a majority of the UN), and often Taiwan (despite limited UN recognition).
- TCC/Travelers Century Club - as mentioned above, 330 "distinct" places.
- Most Traveled People/MTP - list of 1013 distinct places
- NomadMania - 1031 distinct places. For the commenter who mentioned they don't like the "set foot in a country and leave" approach many country counters take this list could be appealing. You have to make a pretty serious effort in many countries to collect all the various "parts" - since finishing the UN list I've found this list great as a suggestion for "next steps" and going more in depth
