Stayed here this past weekend. Around 4pm on a Saturday, I could clearly hear drilling and hammering for a brief moment likely from 2 floors up or below.

Dear sabdhabi,

Smoking areas are available at tables near the swimming pool at The Sala and at the designated smoking area on the Lobby level.

At the moment, there are no plans on opening BarSu on Sundays. I will keep you informed should there be any changes.

I just returned from another great 4 night stay at the SGS after previously staying there two years ago. After a couple of long flights originating in SEA, I had elected to try the in house car service as I knew I wouldn't want to have to deal with a cab. Unfortunately after having been escorted through customs courtesy of the awesome TG ground service in BKK when flying F, my driver was nowhere to be found and I had to wait at least 5 minutes for him to show. I can assume that this was only due to my fast track with customs and all in all wasn't a big deal, however, the point of paying a premium for such a service is to have a seamless experience.

The drive to the hotel was super quick given the late hour and a check-in clerk was waiting for me upon arrival. Check-in was completed in my room which was a great touch. Although suites were showing as available, I was put in a premier room. Again, I didn't make a fuss given the late hour and also due to the fact that I was travelling by myself and thus did not require the extra room. I was also provided with the morning's Globe & Mail which was an awesome touch and clearly recorded in my preferences from my previous stay.

The breakfast buffet at the Orchid Café was very enjoyable each morning with a wide variety of food. I was looking forward to trying the Jazzy Brunch on the Sunday, but after an 8am ending of the night before, I unfortunately had to cancel as sleep was more important at that point.

I also spent a couple of days at the pool and enjoyed a few different smoothies and also some of the food offerings. The pool area was rather busy on both occasions but I was able to grab a lounger without any issies on both days.

Probably the best service during the stay was at the Living Room for evening cocktails where my wine glass was continually kept full without prompting and I literally had to plead with the server to stop bringing over the tasty cocktail canapés as I wasn't going to have any room for dinner later on that evening.

After the first late night of the bachelor party weekend, I had put on my do not disturb light and was hanging out in the room for the afternoon and the front desk called to check on my well being given I hadn't been heard from and the maid had noted my do not disturb sign had not come off - I thought that this was a really nice touch.

Every late afternoon of my stay coinciding with the time change, a Globe & Mail was delivered to my door which I thought was awesome as usually I would just expect to receive the most recent copy the next morning on my door.

The only other very minor issue I had was after cleaning my room one day, I noticed that the maid not only didn't replenish the toilet paper, but didn't leave me with any whatsoever, however this was mitigated with a quick call to the front desk. To the maid's defense she came by an hour later apologizing profusely with a couple of spare rolls on top of the ones that were brought up.

Late checkout at 5pm given a late flight was granted without question with one of the hotel Mercedes waiting for me at the front door.

All in all another great stay and I look forward to stay again the next time I have an excuse to stop in BKK.

I've had two four-night stays at SGS over the past couple of weeks. AFAICT, nearly the entire Living Room staff is new. It speaks extremely well of the HR Director, Khun Siriluk, that new staff are so thoroughly trained in the SGS way so quickly. Quite impressive, actually, when compared to some of the new employee training programs I have witnessed in the U.S.

There were some questions upthread about how the renovations affected the mid-hallway xx12 suites. Last weekend I was assigned to room 2712. Here's what I found.

The décor was consistent with that of other renovated rooms. The wood trim is now a very dark brown, and, IMO, contrasts very nicely with the blue/green/aqua tiles in the bathroom. (Last time I called them blue and was flamed. I take no position on what color they actually are.) Other wood (e.g., wall unit in the bedroom housing the flat screen television) is a lighter colored wood. I don't understand why all the wood items aren't the same color; and, to me, the lighter and darker wood conflict with each other. Carpeting has been replaced and furniture upgraded, all consistent with the general scheme of the renovation.

The furniture layout in the living/sitting room of the suite has been changed and now works much better. The television, instead of being mounted on the wall in an awkward location and position, is now sitting on top of an appropriately sized piece of furniture. The desk is positioned differently. The layout of the room makes much more sense now, and looks like it was designed as the sitting room of a suite instead of a bedroom in which the bed had been replaced by some living room type furniture.

The suite has been rebranded as a Luxury Suite and there is now only one entrance door. This enters into the foyer of the sitting room, with the bedroom off to the left through a doorway. This doorway is no longer a traditional connecting doorway with door; it is wider, now, and the door has been removed. Again, it looks like it was designed as a suite instead of two connecting rooms from one of which the bed was removed.

Previously, one would walk through the connecting door into the bedroom half, and there would be another "exterior" door (to the hallway) on your left. That door has been removed, and an additional closet built in its place. It is well designed and fits right in with the décor and layout, as a sort of front hall closet one might find in an apartment. Kudos to the architect.

One big advantage of the xx12 suites is that they have two full bathrooms, including toilets, tubs and showers. The bathrooms have been renovated consistent with the changes in other rooms, -- new shower hardware and televisions behind the mirrors over the sinks.

All in all, I would rate these suites as much more desirable now. They both look and feel like suites, not like previously connecting rooms from which a bed was removed.

No problem getting lounges at the pool over the weekend. One person was smoking a cigar in the smoking area; and the smoke carried over into the no smoking area. The no smoking program has been so successful that I had actually forgotten how unpleasant I find the smoke, particularly when lying at the pool. Much to my disappointment, the evening grill at the pool has now been terminated for the season as we move into rainy times.

I was unable to find the oat porridge at breakfast; perhaps it is no longer offered.

I went down to BarSu one evening. Tables have been added, and it now operates as more of a bistro. I had a burger from the bistro menu; and it was great. To be honest, it was as good as any burger I've had in Bangkok. While most of the room is set up with tables set with placemats and silverware like a bistro, the alcoves on the outer edge seem still to be set up like a bar. To me, it felt as if it cannot decide what it wants to be. While it's not fully a bistro, it could hardly be called a bar, either. And with one exception, the staff seems to be entirely new.

The extremely generous (and, IMO, overly so) food offering which has been available in the early evenings for years is now gone, though not surprisingly. I never understood how the hotel could provide so much and such a wide variety of high end foods (including salmon, paté, charcuterie, etc.) free. Unfortunately, it has been replaced by popcorn and peanuts. BarSu has always struck me as a much High[er]-So place than popcorn and peanuts. IMO it clearly has a way to go as management works out the identity it wants to carve out for BarSu. It's a beautiful and unusual room and could be put to better use. And I'm confident that once this gets sorted out, it will be.

Staff, as usual, couldn't have been better. Warm, friendly, helpful, accommodating, -- these people make SGS what it is. As I've said before, any hotel can have a good hard product. All that takes as a good team of architects, interior designers, etc., when building or renovating a property. What makes it and keeps it great is the way that staff treats the guests. This is, after all, the hospitality industry. And the way that it's done here is, IMO, perfect.

Completely agree with your assessment of the renovated xx12 suites.

I do like the corner suite better, but the xx12 center suite is much improved now.

Did you get a chance to ask about Khun Nuch?

Ahhhh. Another great stay or two at the SGS over the last week. So nice.
With a good description I'd probably recognize habshabs444.
I spent a lot of time at the fitness center this go-round sticking to a 63 day program that I've been on. Currently day 62. Kept it going. The staff was friendly and so long as there was no scheduled class in the "studio" area of the gym I was welcome to set up and stream my workouts. (Insanity!)
I wiped out all the San Miguel Light at Sala my first night there but they brought in a case for my pleasure over the remainder of my stay.
The Thai 3-day weekend was nice and the pool was on the quieter side as opposed to the busier side. I caught up with Dr. HFH which was nice. I didn't envy his Monday travel plans, but sure did wish I had serious status on AA as other plans of his were enviable.
It was hot and humid as you can imagine but the "scheduled" thunder showers stayed away my entire stay. I had time to visit the Westin and 4Points during my trip but the SGS remains my go to in BKK due to care and hospitality that is evident from the top on down.
The sala brunch was great on the weekend and Orchid rocked on weekday mornings.

I was able to requalify SPG Plat for my 9X this trip. Just 1 requal and 82 nights stand between me and LT Plat. If I had my druthers, they would all be at 250 Sukhumvit Road...Thanks again SGS for a great trip. It wouldn't have been half as enjoyable without you.
