No. I've never been asked when I use my corporate SET code.

I have never ever been asked for AAA AARP or SET supporting ID or cards in the US. I have been asked every time in China and a few times in Europe.

Generally? Based on what?

In China they don't back down. HKG can also be challenging. I also had a situation in Montreal wher I was on rack rate until the employees of the partner organization who booked my room showed up.

China... please. Maybe they don't back down if you're Chinese but generally speaking if they go on your nerves you tell them to go away and that was it.

At the Sheraton Annapolis (no longer SPG) last month, I had booked the AARP rate, but am clearly not in the "senior" category. The front desk lady stared at me for awhile and then boldly said, "you're not eligible for this rate, you'll have to pay the full rate."

I asked why and she furthered, "this is the AARP rate, you don't qualify." I said, "actually, you don't have to be any certain age to join AARP, you just have to be able to stomach their socialist politics."

I showed her my AARP card and she just stared at me and then eventually handed me my room key.

I think even if you are Chinese, if you do not qualify for some SET rates, you will be asked to pay for the full rates... I heard some of my Chinese colleagues were required to pay full rates...

because rack rate can at times be 4 or 5 times the regular rate....not worth it if you are not entitled to the set rate....

Huh? The rack rate? Why would you pay that? Simply go to another hotel.

... or better yet, cancel your rez and book a new one using your smartphone. Preferably not right there in front of the FDC that sent you away.

What if the reservation has a 24hr notice cancellation policy? How can you cancel, without incurring cancellation charges, on the day of arrival?

We're talking about SET rates here... At least ours have a 6pm day of arrival, so I don't think this is a realistic problem.

huh????go to another hotel????yes, you can do that but you will have to pay at the hotel you originally booked your room at because the cancellation deadline would have probably passed by the time you are trying to check in on a rate you are not entitled to....so you end up paying double by going to another property....

it is....not all set rates have a 'day of arrival' cancellation policy....i've used 4 set rates so far....only one of them had a 'day of arrival' cancellation policy....the other 3 were 24 hours prior....

also, its not necessary that everyone checks in before 6pm....

If they are refusing to allow the rate to be used, then, it would seem to me, that the property is cancelling the rez which they can do at any time. As we know, they rules only apply to us and not them.
