Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

Thought of Wyndham or Choice but I would rather not waste a credit inquiry. 10,000 UR will only get me 4,800 RR through Hyatt but I'll make up that 1,200 point difference in spend on the RR cards. If I wasn't swimming in UR I'd probably go another route.

I never did see an answer to the question about applying for both same day resulting in 1 hard pull vs. 2...

Is there a specific window that will combine the pulls?

edit: Pulled the trigger on the 2 apps, Premier biz and personal. Got pending review for both. The biz app just switched over from the 2 weeks status to the dreaded 7-10 days so I'll have to call recon in the morning. Hopefully I can transfer some of my Ink credit line to the SW biz card.

Just a follow up data point to my post above. Called recon this morning. She (not Jason thankfully) asked the standard questions about nature of the business, revenue, sales, advertising, personal income etc. then put me on hold to review my credit pull...

Came back and said I had 10 inquiries which would only be true if they were counting the 1 from yesterday, going back a full year and could see TRU as well as EXP... asked why I was seeking so much credit. I explained that I applied for multiple cards during the past year because I was interested in the various benefits being offered like hotel status, airline miles, no foreign transaction fees etc and that I thought those benefits were worth the annual fees for the cards. Added that I didn't necessarily want more credit and would happily split some from an existing account. Put me on hold again...then came back and asked why I needed another biz card if I had the Ink. I advised that the Ink was for a different business and explained what that was. Asked me what my monthly spend would be on the new card if approved. I said $1K. Put me on hold again...

Came back and said was recommending me for approval with just a $5K CL... will get final decision in 24-48 hours. Was not asked about the SW personal app which I did a few hours after the biz app. In closing she mentioned an unused card (10 months) that I have had since 2007 and asked if I wanted to be transferred to cust svc to cancel that one. I declined and said I would look into it and call in myself if needed. I'm planning to sacrifice that one for the personal SW card!

Keeping my fingers crossed on the approval for this one and if I get both that will be it for me for quite a while. I may need to take a year off from apps (well, except for my every other month Citi HH card lol).

Yes. Applied on the last day to get 3rd statement month to close in January. It's going to be close as they approved it on 2nd oct, will have to time 2K spend so that I get the bonus in January.

So which method did you end using to apply for the biz card?

I used the link provided by pgary in post #1519. I've used blind links that were posted on FT before and never had an issue. If I do get approved, I'll confirm the bonus terms when I activate the card and report back. I tried to confirm that the 800# provided was really Chase but wasn't able to. I decided I'd rather risk getting a smaller bonus than having my identity stolen. Hopefully someone who has been around more than a month will confirm that they used the 800# and received the card. Until then, I think it's a risk.

I used pgary's link to apply for the Chase SWA Premier Bussiness Card on 10/16/2014. I do have a S-Corp for the last ten years with revenue and profit, but still find that Chase does scrutinaize business applicaitons. I used that 800-278-4370 number to check my applicaiton status via a automated system and am happy to inform I am approved today (10/23/2014). I will provide more data when I receive the card and verify the 50,000 bonus.

Hey guys, if you referred someone, was your 5K referral bonus posted by Chase with the monthly statement? My statement just closed and the referral bonus did not post, and I'm canceling the card in a few days. I'm guessing once I close the card the bonus will never post.

separate question: I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but it can't hurt to double check. If I got the Plus card earlier this year and had the 50K posted, there is no way I can have it count towards CP for next year, right? So even though the year is almost over, the best I can do now is to get another card and have the bonus post before end of year, and I will get CP for just 2015.

Status line updated today with an approval on the personal app without having to call in or sacrifice the unused card. Another data point supporting the theory that The "2 weeks" message means eventual approval. Status still under review for the biz card...

My SW Premiere business card went pending so I called recon and received an answer that he would "recommend me for approval" and even gave me my credit line they would extend. I just received a letter (dated two days after my call) stating I was denied due to too many recent inquiries. It's been 9 days since my conversation with the rep. Since its Saturday, I can't call in. Should I rest easy knowing that the rep approved me or is is possibly they overturned his decision and denied my application even after he "recommended" approval?

Perhaps or hopefully this letter is what you were going to get before your recon call...

I found this on a different page and it holds true for me as I was denied (even with recon, 3 calls) and I get the 7 - 10 day response..

Trick to know what the status of your application is:
Call 1800-432-3117
Press # (or 1, depending on the message)
Press 3
Press 1
Type in your Social
If it says you'll be notified in approx 2 weeks, it's pending
If it says in 7 to 10 days, you've been declined.
