Trying getting a cab from LGA in the evenings during December leading up to Christmas. You'll be wondering why people prefer to stand in the cold in the taxi line 60 people long with no cabs in sight all the while there is less than a 5 minute wait for Uber.

Putting aside the fact that it's a tad early to predict what the situation at LGA will be like in December, there's no question that there are times when waiting in line for a taxi at LGA is the least good option. And that's not limited to evenings in December. But most people are, I think, smart enough to figure out that taking a 10-minute shuttle ride over to the area car-for-hire staging area may make more sense when standing in a 60-deep line for taxis that are not coming. I could be wrong.

Not prediciting. Historically, it's been like that for at least the past two years.

Of course you're predicting; you're predicting what next December will look like based on what historically has happened the past two years. But I agree with this particular prediction: we can say with a high degree of confidence that there will be periods where the lines for taxis will be painfully long. And again, that's not just in December. My point about it being too early to predict what the situation will be was intended to go to the remote lot where the Port Authority is forcing car services to pick up. The press release indicated that the current arrangement is being operated on a one-month pilot basis. Things could change several times between now and December.

But Uber/Lyft continue to grow, taking business away from taxis. I haven't waited in a long taxi line in probably a year. Only a couple of data points, sure, and I suppose I'm lucky.

This will likely shift some business back to the yellow cabs at Terminal B. Sounds like a bit of a nightmare, although I'm sure it was partly teething problems, with both drivers and passengers confused. Not even sure a month is enough of a test.

Yes, FWIW, last Thursday (some T-storms in the afternoon), UberX was $175 from Manhattan to JFK. We took the subway/AirTrain. Even got a seat on the E train the whole way.

E to the Airtrain is the only way we go to JFK even without that usurious pricing scheme.

On my last several trips to LGA from Williamsburg I used Uber pool, which I had never used before. Each trip cost me $9.99! Only once in my (I think) four times of using it did we have to make an intermediate stop on our way to LGA -- to drop off a passenger near the Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue subway station. Two of the other times I was the final passenger to be picked up before we proceeded to LGA, and on one of the times I was the only passenger. I'm a huge fan of taking public transportation to and from both LGA and JFK, but this has been a game changer for me.

#&$*% - That's why I refuse. I don't believe this is market pricing based solely on demand. I think it's price gouging.

I don't know if this is helpful, but I took Juno from Union Square to LGA on a Thursday morning about 630 am via the Williamsburg and it was $30 (with a 30% discount as a newly-registered user).

I've mentioned this before, and it's worth repeating for new viewers to this thread. If you want a cab, and don't want to wait on a long line, head to where the cabs are dropping their fares off, then hop in. Technically taxi cabs aren't allowed to do this, but I won't tell.

You're implying there's any sort of difference between the two. Uber charges what the market will bear. I can't imagine getting worked up about someone asking more for something than I'm willing to pay.

I certainly believe there is a difference between market pricing and price gouging and the latter is, in fact, illegal:

http://codes.findlaw.com/ny/general-...ect-396-r.html

By analogy, do you think it's ok for stores to jack up prices on bread and batteries before a storm? NY says it is not.
