This thread is for the World of Hyatt Globalist members to share the experience of room (suite in particular) upgrades members receive at various Hyatt hotels and resorts. This is not about the suite upgrade by using TSU (Tier Suite Upgrade) certificate. It is discussed in a separate thread. https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/hyatt-world-hyatt/1825293-world-hyatt-globalist-experiences-tier-suite-upgrades.html

All WoH members receive two (2) Tier Suite Upgrade (Suite Upgrade Awards) certificates by reaching 50 Qualifying Nights or 80,000 Base Points Milestone Awards. By reaching 60 Qualifying Nights or 100,000 Base Points Milestone Awards, all WoH members also received two (2) additional Suite Upgrade Awards (TSUs) to a total of four (2) Suite Upgrade Awards (TSUs) each year. By earning the last Milestone Awards, the WoH member also reaches WoH Globalist status and receive other elite benefits.

By using the TSU awards, the suite upgrade (to standard suite) can be confirmed at booking or any other time before check-in. Most likely only standard suite can be confirmed. Without using the TSU awards, room upgrade normally can't be confirmed.

According to WoH membership terms, https://help.hyatt.com/en/hyatt-terms/world-of-hyatt-terms.html?icamp=woh_benefitbadges_terms#/VC

(c) Best Room Available: Globalists will receive the best room available at the time of check-in at Hyatt hotels and resorts, including Standard Suites and rooms with Club lounge-access. The best room available will be determined by the applicable hotel or resort in its sole discretion and may vary from stay-to-stay. The “best room” may, but will not necessarily be, of a room type/category higher than that booked by the Member. Best-room-available benefit includes only Standard Suites (where available), which are defined as rooms within each participating hotel’s or resort’s introductory suite category. Premium, Specialty, Premier, Presidential, Diplomatic, and other suites other than Standard Suites are not included in this benefit. Not valid at Caption by Hyatt, Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Destination Residences, or Hyatt Residence Club hotels and resorts.

Some Hyatt properties will automatically recognize WoH elite status and inform member about the room upgrade opportunity. If room upgrade is not mentioned at check-in time, then member needs to request at check-in time or any other time before room is assigned.

Small Luxury Hotels does not recognize most of the WoH elite benefits. So often, room (suite) upgrade is declined.

Yes, we've been over this ad nauseum. Hyatt has a fraction of the properties that Marrwood or Hilton or even IHG does. It's comparing apples and oranges. If half the places one travels to don't even have a Hyatt, then yes, it's freaking lofty.

As well as the footprint, other chains have a much better spread of rates and categories so you can easily pick up a lot of Marwood/Hilton nights at a cheaper rate compared to Hyatt. If most of your travel is leisure, let's face it - you're not going to spend 60 nights per year on holidays.

I'll be watching this space as to how WoH pans out later in the year, but at this rate I am increasingly inclined to just let my Hyatt status lapse next year and use FHR/Virtuoso going forward. It's quite rare that Hyatt is a dominant best option in any given city anyway.

100% true. Hyatt for me is like 90% leisure. I was able to get diamond several years with my leisure nights and a little bit of work. But now it will be impossible. There is almost no hyatts in the places I go for work all the time.

I plan my trips months ahead and rarely have problems applying DSU. With the new expiration, I was only able to apply for the 1 of 3 stays with family of 4 I needed, even when callling early 3/1/17.

Checked into HR Tokyo last night. I have been checking every few days since 3/1/17 to try to apply DSU with no success and they are listed as sold out when I last checked. Boy was I shocked when they told be I was upgraded to a regency suite for a 4 night stay!! Bonus was that I did not have to use a DSU.

Similar thing happened last year when PH Vienna was sold out and they upgraded me to 1 week to the Ambassador/diplomat suite.

I understand it may be to make standard room available when they are sold out but I still really appreciate it.

Also stayed at HR Ohare 3/24 and was given regency suite when requested.

I had two stays over the weekend:

-- One night at Hyatt Place Baton Rouge. Booked standard room, upgraded to "high-floor room" which is the best they have. It's not called a suite but it's what many hotels would call a junior suite, with a separate semi-walled-off sitting area and a kitchenette. As a Diamond I was generally upgraded to one of these rooms even before the new policy.

-- Two nights at Hyatt Centric French Quarter. Booked standard room. The man who checked me in said I was upgraded to a "king room overlooking the pool". I didn't exactly request a suite, but I said this was my third Hyatt stay as a Globalist and that I understood suite upgrades were contingent on availability but was curious about whether Globalists actually ever do get upgraded to suites. He said oh yes, we're happy to upgrade you to a suite when it's available, but we're very full right now. I shrugged, went to the room -- which turned out to be on the second floor, not "overlooking" the pool but on the same level as the pool and an adjacent courtyard and sitting area, so that I had to keep the curtains closed -- and then looked on the app to find that "petite suites" were offered for sale on both nights of my stay. But I decided it wasn't worth fighting about since I wasn't planning to be in the room very much. Also, a couple of years ago I was upgraded to a "petite suite" and found it not very impressive. My instinct is that my non-upgrade this time may have had more to do with the personality of the guy who checked me in than with hotel policy. I later had some dealings with another front desk person and an assistant manager, both of whom were extremely friendly and accommodating. I have a feeling that if either of them had checked me in I might have gotten the suite upgrade.

So I don't really mind that I haven't had a suite on any of my three stays since March 1. But nothing has happened so far to change my opinion that being a Diamond was better than being than a Globalist.

I was 0 for 3 last week for this 'benefit' in the new WoH world, all at properties where I've stayed a lot over the past 5+ years.

HR Dongguan - I was told that all the suites were sold out when I checked in. A bit later after getting the sense that the hotel was a ghost town, I checked availability to book suites and they were wide open. I asked again via the Regency Club manager and was given a few conflicting reasons. Eventually the Dir. of Rooms followed up saying that the rooms were supposed to be blocked out for renovations, but weren't. The excuses didn't seem to line up with each other, but I wasn't motivated to push to much further.

GH Shenzhen - Claimed they were sold out, but I didn't verify. Got a minor upgrade to a slightly better than average room, but not to a suite or the end of the hall deluxe rooms I normally have gotten comp upgrades to.

HR TST - No upgrade offered. I asked, and based on the amount of typing he did, I actually buy that he tried and said they were sold out. Hotel seemed fairly full based on the lounge, so this was probably legit.

All in all, I got the sense that this bene isn't going anywhere long term. In ~30-50 stays at each of these properties - Dongguan, I've never gotten an upgrade, and at GH SZ & HR TST my comp upgrade rate in recent years has been >50% of stays, but no go for both this time.

Hopefully this new bene isn't a step backwards....From Hyatt's perspective I'm already very skeptical if I will keep putting my business there with the 60+ night vs stays policy now. I do 60+ most years, but my travel is such that stays makes more sense for me, I did 4 hotels in 3 countries in 8 days last week. The vast majority of my hotel stays are 1-2 nights. The stays policy at Hyatt has resulted in my focusing 90%+ of my travel dollars to them in recent years as well as well north of $100k/year in credit
card spend on my Hyatt card, but I've been at the point of deciding to walk away. The comp upgrade was keeping me on the fence. If this is a farce, I'm done.

I went to the front desk and explained that I'm currently at HP and will be moving to their hotel (which at that stage was two days away) and asked if there was a better time to come for check in as I was hoping to get a suite as a Globalist. Very nice check in agent said let's take a look at your reservation. He pulled it up and said I was already blocked into a corner suite on 27th floor, but said he wanted to see if there was anything else. Then told me there was a suite on 22nd that I'd probably like better - assuming it's just a nicer view? Anyhow seems they proactively upgraded me a few days before arrival. We'll see how it actually plays out when I check-in tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Just to follow-up at check-in I did get the suite on the 22nd floor that the FD agent had confirmed 2 days prior to arrival. It was very nice. The suites at this property are a bit "tight", but still the view was really nice and it was fun waking up and having coffee in bed and opening the electric shades and just watching over the city.

Thanks Grand Hyatt Seattle - definitely be back on future stays.

Just checked in to the Hyatt Regency Greenwich, CT. I saw on my reservations that they had upgraded me to a suite with a connector...put me in a panic, b/c I got two check in notifications, and thought that I had booked more than one room...glad I was wrong.

Checked in shortly after 3, and was told as a Globalist that I was upgraded, but the suite wouldn't be ready for about an hour...asked for a regular room and after some searching, she put me in a "deluxe" room which is spacious and nicely appointed. So, so far, I'm 2/2 with upgrades at FS properties!

HR FLL Pier 66. Checked-in with reservation for cheapest room. Marina Limited View room.
Auto-Upgraded to Junior Suite, which are the largest rooms available. Nice room and size. Allthough, as the whole hotel, it does need a refresh.
but more than happy here. So far WoH is great.
Have 3 more hotels coming up this and next week.

I'd like to add to the Wiki, but the suite category doesn't make a lot of sense. First, where do we put properties that provide suites ABOVE standard suites? Second, how do we even know offhand whether a suite is standard or above standard?

I have a suite tonight, but no idea whether it is standard or not. My suggestion is to change the first Wiki list to simply suites. If we know whether it's above standard, and I've been to one property where it clearly was, then we can so note.

Why don't you go ahead and rewrite the Wiki headings? I'm not even sure if the current heading means "standard suite" offered, or actually "suite offered as standard upgrade".

Also, I have no idea what "Better Room Not Offered Proactively But Available" means

I'm done with Hyatt after this year. 4 stays since WOH, not a single suite upgrade.
2 stays at HR Austin, 1 at HR Houston Galleria, currently at Andaz 5th Avenue.
In fact, the clerk at the Andaz 5th even admits that management is playing games with upgrade by only allowing upgrades to the "balcony suite" even though plenty of other suites are available,

It's pretty clear that the new upgrade policy was mostly for PR purposes. Basically no change from previous policy where it wasn't in the terms and hotels did whatever they wanted.

Answer: NEITHER. after checking with a manager, they really really kept trying to strong arm me into using a DSU for this one night stay. Offered me an even higher level suite if I'd give them a DSU. (I guess they must get reimbursed more by corporate for a DSU?). Just took the standard room.

Also Disappointed--but not surprised--that they would not allow restaurant breakfast instead of lounge breakfast since we had an early flight and needed to leave before the lounge opened. Instead they offered to call the lounge and try to have them package an apple for us as a breakfast-to-go.
Is that the base level suite? Would be very surprised if they denied you if there was availability.

Checked in this week for a 3 night stay and was upgraded without asking to a Sunset Suite. My colleague, who didn't have his WoH number attached until check-in, was also upgraded. My first upgrade ever at the hotel without using a DSU.

I sent a stern complaint to the sales associate last week after not receiving an upgrade and she sent a nice response that she had spoken with the front desk. Seems to have been a positive interaction.
