Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

It seems to me that if I were to book an itinerary through the BA website the price is often somewhat higher (due to different stopover rules?) and also on domestic 3-class flights it sometimes books into Business rather than into First.

I've seen suggestions on this board that one solution is to phone BA and ask that the individual flights be booked under AA codes - is that the best way, or is there a way it can be booked on the AA website using a BAEC number?

Likewise for US codes? Can they be quoted to BA on the phone? Or can I book on the US website using my BAEC number?
BA website sells you the same thing as ITA finds but it is a bit imperfect and doesn't always find the cheapest option or the route you want.

BA website does not sell US or AA codes unless it has to.

You can book BA, AA, US, AY, IB, and JL flights by phone to BA or using a travel agent. Some folks have reported that BA is willing to sell flights by phone on any metal with whom they have an interline ticketing agreement (which is basically every major network carrier worldwide).

You can book on AA.com using the "Sort by schedule" option, the "Show flights from AA, American Eagle, and oneworld partners" option, and then choose show 50 flights. Reproduce exactly what you found on ITA. Do not log into the AA website, use the "Proceed as guest option", and when the chance arises, enter your BAEC number. It should recognize your status and award you points automatically without any problems.

Thanks for the tips. I guess I have to wait for a new sale. Budget a 1800 euro for MlRun is maximum. I saw some flights with US AIRWAYS from Dublin to Phoenix at 1800 euro.. connect PHL No flights from RTM or AMS

Don't bother with BA.com as generally its booking engine cannot handle complex routing codes. Also, it won't give you the most TPs on AA operated two-class flight (Y and F) because it will book into J.

This is what I do. I first use the Matrix to get an idea of the dates at the price that suits me. I then price it up and look at the routings. After that, I go to aa.com, multi-city search and fill in all the fields that I need. After this point, I either look based on the price or schedule. I always make sure I can get the price that I got from Matrix and then start to tweak the schedule.

Maximising TPs whilst keeping the price down will take some time and will be dependent on how much time you want to spend at various destinations. Just by of an example, my current trip will be:

CPH-HEL-LHR-LCY-JFK-PHX-HNL-PHX-JFK-LCY-LHR-MAD-DUB

I could have gone back to HEL instead of DUB but the price went up a £110 and quite frankly I didn't fancy it. Nailing down this itinerary took me about two hours from start to finish and that was just because I kept playing around with the cities.

My wife calls it 'a quest' but I like trying to maximise the TPs but keep the price low and accommodative to what I want.

As far as booking goes, I always call BA to do it and feed them all the information (line by line). This way I can get additional Avios by using the BA Amex. One can book online with AA but the additional Amex Avios won't be given. Alternatively, dutch_122 may be able to do the reservation for you and all you have to do is ring BA to pay for it.

Thank You to EI147, Calchas and Hoch for your helpful tips and I will go away again to play with ITA Matrix. I was just thinking of going as far as SFO and LAX but now HNL is definitely coming into play thanks to the various routings which others have posted.

That's what I realised some time ago, that my 1200TP trip won't take me to gold because some flights are AA and they won't counts towards next tiers, am I right?

I will get Bronze with weekend TP run no problem, as it's 6 x BA flights. But then I will have enough points to get to Silver but not enough BA flights, just 2 x BA and 2 x AA and they are booked on my tickets as AA.

The same for my husband, he won't get silver even though he will have 1200TP, because he won't have enough BA Flights. I can easily fix it for myself, just fly on the cheapest possible route on BA and will have enough flights but my husband is not flying a lot.

Is my thinking right? Number of eliglible flights is counted from the date particular tier was reached? Or is it global number of flights done in membership year?

Note that you can bring the price down somewhat by shifting the departure into one of the current sale's low-fare periods (assuming it is an option):

27 MAR 15 THROUGH 12 APR 15 OR
01 JUL 15 THROUGH 31 AUG 15 OR
22 NOV 15 THROUGH 30 NOV 15

This.

So if you have done four flights already and are at 300TP, none of the flights in the 1200TP run need to be on BA - you will still make gold.

Also, even if some are AA-ticketed, BA metal will still count (or vice versa).

If your husband's flights between Dublin and London are either on a BA flight number or a BA aircraft (either or both!) and are paid, then those in themselves would get you to the four qualifying flights. To get to 1200 in a single run, that must be the Babybus, which has to be a qualifying flight, and LCY-DUB is not operated by EI as far as I know, so those are your four qualifying flights in any event.

Relative BA newbie here, who does read the wiki/s cover to cover. I also refer to the BA wikis from time to time as I am learning how BA works, or doesn't.
I don't really have anything to add at this time, but I like reading your collective thought processes.

Anybody care to suggest any options for the following. I am very restricted as to dates and trying to combine some work commitments near London with a 13 hour gap in an existing TP run in which I need to get from MAN to LHR.

Looking for a short trip to get a few extra TP if I can make this work.

Sunday 25/1 from Manchester or London to ??? and returning to London same day. Could also start ex-EU if I can get an early morning flight out of Manchester with LCC and therefore just looking to do ex-EU to LHR.

Monday 26/1 from London to Manchester late evening. The last flight from LHR is 19.50

Wednesday 1/4 from Manchester to ??? and return to LHR. Cannot leave Manchester until 09.30 and need to be at LHR by 20.00

Overall, I think this is not going to happen, but would be grateful for any possible suggestions. Think I am more or less looking for an ex-EU return flight to Manchester departing 25/1 with overnight stop in London and returning on 1/4 with an extra flight back to London on 1/4.

Not sure if this makes sense, but if you can give any ideas then that would be appreciated.

Ah, ok, so no problem there. In that case I will make gold and my husband silver no problem. I wasn't sure how it works between the tiers. I usually use BAEC for free flights and never get to any higher tier.

1) The BA website - on the link kindly provided by KARFA - clearly says that codeshares on oneworld airlines using Partner metal get TPs and Avios.

2) AS is precisely in this situation. AS is a partner with both AA and BA as it happens, it's not oneworld (yet!) however. AA has a long list of AA coded flights on AS metal, around the Anchorage - Hawaii - Los Angeles triangle - and quite a number outwith that area too.

3) Despite what it says on the website, AA and AS didn't include a TP credit aspect in their codesharing agreement; the pre-existing BA-AS Partnership agreement also doesn't have it in.

4) Therefore when AA process the BA member's travel, it does not award TPs for the service, and they don't credit.

5) If the BAEC member then requests them retrospectively, BA sends it to AA. AA don't play ball, BA has no agreement with AS on the issue.

6) Despite all the above, at least one person around here did get TPs and Avios automatically (namely me).

Now there may be some people getting discretionary TPs from BA due to this silliness, I guess having status will help in that respect, but basically BA's website says one thing, custom and practice is different. Kindly avoid shooting the messenger!
Thanks to all the advice on here I managed to (almost) get to Gold and some sight seeing in the Longbeach area thanks to a spare 24 hours in the US.

Unfortunately I frustratingly am sitting on 1475 TPs rather than a projected 1535 as a AS segment of a SEA-LAX-HNL AA coded flight did not post and the subsequent claim was rejected for both TPs (and Avios? ). I'm going to call through on Monday, anyone have any other advice? And to think my biggest fear was irrops during the bad weather in December.

I spoke with another FTer today who got those points after 9 phone calls and a good deal of patient insistence.
