Still expensive, but if one is going to spend more than that amount the rest of the year anyways, I don't see that there is really a "cost" for the service, and the advantage is reaching that level immediately.
Correct.

Properly planned, an EXP-Lite could get EXP status thru 2/09 with this $10k card. How?

Spend some of it (say $5k) thru remainder of 2006 qualifying for EXP thru 2/08. Then, before 5/31/07, spend the remainder (the other $5k) to qualify thru 2/09. If you're already partway to EXP this year, then budget less of the $10k for 2006 flying and more to 2007 flying (thru 5/31/07).

For budget minded EXP-Lites, this is a real boon.

Good points!

I suggested something pretty similar to this back in January on another thread.

And the very next day, Connected1 complimented your "very good idea." Hmmmm . . .

Hope you get something for your suggestion box entry.

Sorry, I should have said my analysis was in comparison to just getting Platinum via a challenge. In that case the only benefits are the ones I mentioned (only for DONEx), plus maybe some extra elite bonus miles on the first flight or two before challenge completion. (Although, I qualified on my first RTW segment JFK-SYD, so got the 100% bonus right off the bat).

Unfortunately not...

All travel purchased with the Card must be completed and all funds in your Account must be used by February 28, 2007.

I think the timing on this is poor. If I could purchase January 1, 2007 for 10k of spending throughout the year, I would do it. The question is, do ticket receipts simply show the amount and thus would my client reimburse me as they do now? I think so. If anyone has used the card in this manner, chime in.

I'm also trying to understand the timing of this offer. What is the downside to AA making this offer January 1, 2007 and expiring 12/31/07?

So, what if you bought the card, used it for your normal flying the rest of the year, then on 2.28.07 purchased a refundable ticket for whatever you had left and refunded it (which I am guessing takes some time)? Can they force you to spend the money on the extension?

*The Card is valid for purchases of American Airlines travel products and services only.

Is an AA gift card considered a travel product? If so, I could see some work-arounds here....
