Solar Eclipse - April 8 2024
Driving from DC to central Ohio... showers expected in the afternoon but still going.
Anyone else heading (or staying at home) to see the eclipse?

Will go out my door and look up. Should have very close to four minutes of eclipse but it is looking like an overcast sky is very likely.

I'm on the edge of totality in west Fort Worth. My girlfriend is 15 miles west of me and out of totality, so she's planning on coming to my house to watch.

We will be in Waco. If its cloudy then Im sure we will still experience some form of totality. In 2020 we had orange sky and I drove across a bridge under the orange sky.

I have refundable tickets to DFW early monday morning and back that night, with a plan to take DART to a nearby park -- no hotel, no rental car, no highways. However, if the weather forecast holds with showers/clouds, would cancel, but won't make that call until Sunday.
Ironically, have reason to be in upstate NY the next weekend, and their weather may actually be better based on the early forecasts. However, flying overnights and witching that visit to mid-week would be difficult, so that's more of a wishful backup than a real plan.

I live in the metro Nashville area and was in the path of totality in 2017.That day in August had a lot of intermittent cloudy skies. The Grand Ole Opry had a really fun party there but as the sky became darker, it triggered ALL of the lights there plus at the immediately adjacent huge Opry Mills Mall which mitigated the magic so to speak. That, plus the increasing clouds made it less than desirable for the experience. Fast forward to April 8 and I am in the 90% zone of totality and yet again, the forecast is for mostly cloudy skies. I did buy brand new solar glasses just in case the skies do allow better viewing. No other occupation in the world is allowed to be so wrong as much as meteorology, yet they keep their jobs! For once I hope the forecast is wrong here!
Good luck to those who either already live in the zone or who travel there!

Family and I drove up to Casper, WY, for the 2017 eclipse. The city went all out for the festivities; they repurposed their largest city park into a massive campsite with plenty of porta-potties (drained/cleaned every morning) and the use of the on-site rec center for showers. I don't believe we saw a single cloud in the sky the whole weekend. Midwest weather isn't as predictable, so I'll just stay at home and look at the partial eclipse.

We're flying to Montreal for the weekend. Fortunately the forecast for Monday seems to be improving (chance of rain has decreased). However, I just read an article that someone recalculated the totality zones and Montreal's now at something like 99/75% totality. Which isn't totality. So we may have to drive off island if we want totality. (Will have to see if the in-laws have any desire to do so.)

There's a healthy thread in the Texas forum to cover the Eclipse in Texas:
2024 Eclipse - Texas
I had just assumed that the other regional forums had similar threads, but I haven't looked.
We plan to stay home. Where we live we should get about 2-1/2 to 3 minutes of totality, plus an hour of, "dusk," before and an hour of, "dawn," after it. I'm curious how the animals in the park will react; generally they are more active at night, so maybe we'll get to see more in action. And I'm also curious if our dogs will get confused and think it is bedtime...
There are several large bat colonies in the area. One is in a cave, and the experts don't think that those will be confused. However those that perch under bridges might... There are always crowds on the Congress Bridge in Austin waiting to watch them every night, and I'm sure it will be even worse for the eclipse. Close to home, the I-35 bridge over McNeil Rd in Round Rock has a decent amount, without the drama.
Most counties in/near the area of totality have declared disasters so they can have additional support on hand for extra traffic (and accidents). They are encouraging people not to go far.
Our weather isn't predicted to be the best for it. But even on a cloudy we still have dawn and dusk, so I assume we'll see what's happening. The weather people have also said that the temperature will drop and probably won't recover too much after (I remember this after past eclipse events).

I reserved two hotel rooms in Erie, on Marriott points, last April. I released one yesterday, and it’s listed at $980. (Oops - now gone. One other Marriott property in town, $1,891).
We’ll drive up Sunday night - about 90 minutes. MsCP has a meeting with a friend at a local college in the morning, then there’s a viewing event at a public park about a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
I dug out the 2017 glasses yesterday, and they appear to be unaffected by sitting in a dark drawer for 6+ years.
The weather forecast has deteriorated from “partly cloudy” to “mostly cloudy” over the last few days. Sunny Sunday and rain starting at 7pm, so it will depend on how quickly the front moves in.
I had a full view from Knoxville in 2017, but MsCP couldn’t come, so hopefully she gets to see something.
