Passport Agency Appointments (same day expedited service)
Appointments for same-day expedited service often go quickly. It is best that you schedule your appointment with the passport agency exactly 14 days before your trip. You will want to call the passport number before the center opens at 8am EST as they will have just opened up one day (14 days out) of appointments at all agencies. Appointment times start at 8am. It is important that you have enough buffer in your travel schedule. For example, if you make an appointment for a new passport at 11am and your time of travel is at 2pm, there will not be enough time for you to get your passport. If you book the 8am slot you may have to wait until the end of the business day to get your new passport or it may only be a few hours.
You will want to have your date of travel, time of travel, your flight itinerary number, name of destination, full name of applicant, and applicant's birth city, and the zip code of where you live (to help them find the closest available center with open slots). Use the following steps to increase your chances of success to booking an appointment as they can go very quickly:

If you have a locator not in the above list, check the return address agency name or postmark/ZIP on your returned citizenship docs, or passport card if you applied for one, which may be the processing office, although the address itself is likely to be a PO Box in Sterling, VA in all cases (which appears to be a lockbox location that processes mail for all locations). The passport books are printed in fewer locations, often Hot Springs and Tucson, and may not correspond to the agency where the processing steps occurred. If it doesnt match the list above, please add or correct.

- Continue to Click 7 to repeat, and keep doing this while watching your watch or using Time.gov to get the exact time down to the second.
- When your it hits exactly 8:00 am Click 2 (for traveling within 14 days option)
- There will be a delay of 3-4 second and you will wait for the next available agent. If you are very lucky, you will be put straight through to an agent. You may be waiting few minutes or maybe as long as 15-20 minutes.
- If you did not click 1 exactly at 8 am, you may have to wait for more than an hour and half

Jan 19, 2021 - New Passport in a priority mail envelope was delivered to our house
Looks like they have been working mad fast lately
I did NOT pay for any type of expidited or express - our potential trip is for Mid July 2021 - so I was willing to chance that we had enough time

I applied for my 5 years old passport at USPS as well. He has another 5 years old passport expiring in June. I applied 01/22/2021 paid no expedite since our trip is not until July. I used a personal check but didn’t pay for expedite or any additional service. How does USPS handle those applications? Do they ship applications to local facility?? I was wondering since they didn’t charge me for mailing the application to Passport agency. Perhaps this is why they are quick to process?

Also - if you wrote 1 check, you probably wrote it for the combined fees and the fee for a money order which they filled out to the state dept. If you look at your receipt it should have the money order number. If you wrote 2 checks - one for the $80 and one for the $35, then they just send the $80 with the application and keep the $35 one at the post office.

You should have paid $80 for the passport and $35 for the "Execution fee" the execution fee goes to the post office to cover their time and also for mailing etc.

a friend of mine has family in Europe. His newborn needed a passport in June 2020. Odd enough, he applied for a normal processing because they didnt allow expedited at the time. Two weeks after, he called the 1800 number and told them his grandma was very sick and provided her doctors note. The next morning the local passport agency called him to come the day after to pick up his passport. He didnt even pay for the expedite fee. If you dont get it by 02/15 you should call and explain that you need an emergency appointment

If you mail it in yourself there are several agencies that depending on what state you live in, you mail to a certain place. I do not know if those are the same places the USPS mails too.
I didn't look at the return address when my Daughter's passport was mailed to us.

They definitely mail it somewhere - only the State Department can issue Passports - the USPS just collects the data - you can just as easily mail in the application yourself.
If you mail it in yourself there are several agencies that depending on what state you live in, you mail to a certain place. I do not know if those are the same places the USPS mails too.

They don't commonly take longer, assuming: the infant's photo is acceptable, the application has been properly completed along with the required supporting material, and handled as due from in-person submission and afterward. They often enough get back to the US Embassies/Consulates faster from the US than even straight-forward adult renewals. Domestically-submitted applications aren't exactly the same story, but there is no common issue with new passports for infants taking longer.
I would assume that typically the infant's passport would be back well before your anticipated flight date.

call the 1800 they will manage to expedite it. He couldnt get an appointment on his own so they managed to talk to the local passport agency even though he mailed it in.

1/28 - Check cleared
2/12 - Status changed to "Shipped" (email with USPS Priority tracking number sent)
