This is pretty **** stupid on UAL's part. Let's see, you've got people with lots of seniority who are willing to take a furlough and you can replace them with people who are low on the seniority list, which means they get less pay. I heard from a couple of the crew on my last flight that until you get 10 years in, you are not making all that much money.

So you can replace high cost employees with low cost employees who will do the same job. Even better, the high cost employees WANT to do this.

Any first year business student would tell you to do it. So why UAL won't do it is beyond me.

Labor cost savings, improved morale, and the same service. And they won't do it?

United Airlines To Recall 1,200 Furloughed Flight Attendants

UA today said that due to its increased April schedule, it will recall an additional 1,200 of the 2,700 United flight attendants who were furloughed last fall. This brings to 2,000 the number of flight attendants recalled since January 31. United announced earlier this month that it would add 127 flights to its April schedule in certain markets and would recall some flight attendants and furlough fewer pilots, thanks in part to slightly stronger customer demand.

Earlier this month, United indicated it was preparing to recall some of its cabin staff and furlough fewer of its pilots. Thursday's announcement brings the total of attendants called back since January to 2,000.

At two of the airline's major hubs, Chicago and San Francisco, a total of 769 attendants will be returning to work as a result the latest recall.

The United move reflects cautious optimism in the airline industry where passenger numbers were down 14.2 percent last month, but the decline is slowing.

I did not see any SIN based crews being recalled. Did they just fire these people?

When I was at the SIN UAL office two weeks ago, the agent made a comment that the Singapore based crews were in a different union and it was much easier to lay them off. Did not get any more details than that.

And four months later...

As for the flight attendants, they have not even received a proposal, said Bobbie Pilkington, secretary-treasurer of their union. Her statement directly contradicts Mr. Creighton's speech, in which he said, "We've made proposals to the I.A.M. and to all other groups of represented employees."

"Nobody has given us anything at this point," Ms. Pilkington said. "Most people view employee concessions as just paying for bad management," she said.

But Ms. Pilkington said that her union would continue to deal with Mr. Creighton if asked to do so, even if he is scheduled to leave his post.

A spokesman for United, Joe Hopkins, said the airline would not comment on negotiations.

That hasn't been the case with other unions. The union representing the airline's 24,000 flight attendants, who were awarded a 7.5 percent raise retroactive to April by an arbitration panel, repeatedly has said it will not negotiate a salary cut.
