I would definitely do it. Let's see what you can get out of those $1100: 24000 + 6000 (25%) = 30000 miles this year, and additional (100%-25%)*50000 = 37500 miles as 1P vs. 2P next year.

So not counting the UDU benefits, possible elite choice benefits or other promotions, you can get at least 67500 miles out of those $1100, It is pretty worthy it I think.

I'm going to come in 18K short of 1K. Any ideas of best/quickest/cheapest options for an MR?

Is it worth trying to rack up the miles to elite status?

I currently need 16,235 elite status miles. I will have at least two round trips in the next couple months SFO to IAD/BWI racking up another 10K.

My question is worth trying to figure out a way to get to the elite status? If so, are there any tricks I can use to expedite the point earning process that does not require their credit card?

This question seemingly gets asked every couple of days, so I'm sure this'll be combined to another thread shortly. Honestly, the answer depends on how much flying you plan on doing next year.

Welcome to Flyertalk.
It all depends on how much you plan to use the elite status when you get. How much flying will you do in 2011?

No, it sounds like to OP needs 16K EQM for 2P, not that he has 16K. It seems as though after his/her two transcontinentals, another 6K is still needed.

If I were the OP, I might just consider crediting miles to an Aegean account if he doesn't think he'll fly much next year. After his two trips, he'd get Star Silver and all its benefits. But if he plans to fly 20K+ next year on UA, then I would say going for 2P would be worth it IMO.

0.5 EQS short

It looks at this point as if I will end 2010 with 59 EQS (possibly 59.5, if one segment gets booked as a full Y fare). Obviously, 1P is desirable enough that it would be worth booking an inexpensive flight, even on US. Before I do that, I'm wondering what alternatives I might have, aside from calling UA & begging.

Am based in WAS so BWI/DCA/IAD would be best.

I am in the same boat, and sitting on a $350 e-cert.

Unless I read the promotion wrong, I think the easiest way to do this is to schedule a single JFK-SFO trip and return. There is a triple miles promotion right now and it reads like all triple count for EQM.

And you get a trip to SFO!
