Sigh. Okay, thanks. Looks like it's the economy cabin for me.

They say suffering is good for the soul. I managed to survive a few transcons on US and only have a very slight limp as a result.

That's being too charitable. "Coach" better describes UA's product.

The OP is flying on US, not UA. And if UA's product is Coach, US's product is Waterboy.

^

I just came back from China a couple of weeks ago on UA in coach -- at least it was E+ and even THAT got unbearable when I had to connect from my transpac to a 4+ hour flight from Chicago to SNA.

Only reason I'm flying US is because they're the only *A carrier with full-size planes going in to Chattanooga.

I'm surprised that Chattanooga gets any big planes; impressive!

Is it a e170 or similar or a real Boeing/Airbus aircraft?

I haven't flown a big plane going into CHA in quite a while. It's just RJs afaik.

Sorry -- I misspoke (miswrote?). I'm flying in to ATL and then driving to Chattanooga. You're both correct -- it's RJs only, and I don't fly on those.

Sometimes USAirways sells upgrades at the gate so you may be able to purchase one. They start at $50 for a ~300-500 mile flight and increase in cost from there.

Every US mainline flight I've taken outside of their Shuttle product have sold u/g's at the gate--at least as of the last times I forced myself to endure US, that was. Maybe they have more "success" filling the F cabin with their elites and paid fares these days.

I'm flying SNA/ATL via PHX. I just checked in on-line and was offered an F upgrade on the PHX/ATL leg for $150, which I think is very reasonable for 3+ hours in the air. I snapped it up. Now if I can just get the same offer on my return.
