So I just went through customs / passport control two days ago, albeit at the IAB since IAD is my home airport. Since last visit, things have changed.

GE kiosk is quicker: no longer asks any questions regarding declarations. Just takes your photo and spits out receipt. However, everyone then had to stand in a long line to speak with CBP officer, who asked each person the declaration questions and pointed them to green line (nothing to declare) or red line (something to declare). Process was painfully slow and GE didn't save nearly as much time as in the past.

Don't know for sure, but I would assume it's now the same process at midfield. Also don't know whether this is a permanent change, or another limited-time experiment. So just a word of caution for anyone who's used to clearing quickly with GE: factor in some extra time (at least for now).

Is the upshot that if TSA is not checking ID or boarding pass (which is unlike what TSA does at other hub connections that send you landside), one could access the Polaris Lounge on arrival without an onward BP? I seem to recall seeing something to this effect on this thread a few months ago but after scrolling back a few pages, couldn't find it so thought perhaps my memory was faulty.

I suppose that would work, although I very rarely terminate at IAD so never thought about that before. Let us know if you have chance to try it.

I know this was addressed recently upthread, but is there a UA desk to tag a bag in the transfer area?

I'm flying AF, connecting to UA on separate tickets. Even though they interline baggage, there's probably 0 chance AF will tag my bag to its final destination for a simple drop and go.

I don't know which facility I'd be processed at on arrival.

I believe if you get it through checked onto the UA flight at your point of departure you’d have no issues retrieving after clearing customs and then dropping for the UA connection. Same as any OA international arrival to UA connection at IAD.

If not checked through, you would have to take it to the UA standard check-in counter like any standard departure.

Yeah. It's up to AF to bag tag it like that and I'm fairly certain they won't which means a standard check in. Thanks

My direct ORD-EDI flight was canceled and United has suggested ORD-IAD-EDI as an alternative. This works for us but we arrive in IAD at 9:15 pm and depart at 10:40 pm. Is this enough time to connect? Is there anything involved in this domestic-to-international connection besides walking down the terminal a few gates? The next earlier flight would involve waiting at IAD for over 4 hours. Not desirable as I'm traveling with a 4 year old. But I don't want to miss the connection either as there is only one IAD-EDI per day.

Over an hour - plenty of time… if there are no weather issues at ORD.

OP: When ORD has afternoon / evening thunderstorms, things can back up quickly. The 1.5 hour connection is easily made in most circumstances, but if the weather is bad, the chances of making the connection drop precipitously. If you choose to keep your current itinerary, I’d keep an eye on the weather and be ready to call UA and ask to be put onto the earlier flight to IAD if the forecast is dire.

This is implied in my post. The assessment is on the connection itself, and not other factors which can play a role for any type of connections.

If I have a D/I connection and my domestic leg is delayed so our connection drops to 44 minutes, can I force united to re-route?

Thank you, I will do that. My concern was less about strictly making the connection during ideal circumstances and more that a short/routine delay would blow my connection. It seems like delays are at times more the norm lately and ideal circumstances less commo . I accepted the itinerary but I'll be watchful of the situation on the day.

No, you cannot force UA to re-route you due to a delay. You can ask, and they might agree. At a 44-minute connection, it’ll be very much YMMV whether or not you’ll get any sympathy.

Quick question please as I have not connected via IAD since pre-covid times. Flying MEX-IAD-BRU-DSS and will check bags. Will I need to claim and re-check in IAD or will it get checked through? Thanks!!!
