I've become incredibly frustrated with the upgrade splitting because it almost always leads me to getting split from my companion in E+.

Several times, I've been traveling with my GF who is a silver. When I split at check-in, she always seems to get separated from me when we already have seats in E+ together. Last week, we had an aircraft substitution (737-800 to 737-800 different config) and I noticed we both ended up separated in E+ in middles (was supposed to be window and middle). I called the 1K desk and there was nothing they could do and told me not to split the reservation then. If you can move my companion away, then why can't you move the person in her seat? GF still inherits my 1K status, so what gives?

How hard is it to ensure that my companion and I are still seated together? She's a silver, so she should be eligible for E+ at check-in anyway. Should I never split so that I don't need to babysit our reservations / seat assignments?

This keeps happening and we're both frustrated.

Why are you splitting the PNR if you want to sit together?

Not that there's any excuse for UA moving your GF from her assigned seat.

Had an interesting experience.. Flying SLC to LAS with non status companion. We both cleared outbound upgrades, so on check in there was no option given to split the res. I de-selected the auto check in for the return so it wouldn't auto split. On the return, we cleared 1 leg at T-24. When I went to check in on the day of flight, again there was no question asking to split. For the 2nd leg, we were both listed on the upgrade list.

So did the problem get fixed??

This is how it should be...right?? Splitting shouldn't be an option unless you have more than two people on the res, then if so, it should give you the chance to select your upgrade companion from those on the res, then split the rest off. Wishful thinking I know..:D:D

Are you sure it didn't split anyway? I had an outbound flight a couple weeks back wait listed for a mileage upgrade. It didn't ask me if I wanted to wait list/split, but it did it anyway.

I split so if one of us gets the UG, she can take it. If neither of us gets an UG, then I fully expect that we sit together in E+. Neither of us getting the upgrade and getting split up in E+/E- with UA saying they can't do anything is not acceptable.

Happy GF on leisure travel = I fly UA for work every week. Unhappy GF = I take my work $$$ elsewhere.

If you are asking if this is how it should be in a perfect world, yes I agree (I mean, where two-person PNRs can be added to the upgrade list at the airport). In today's world, no, that can't happen. To be on the upgrade standby list (the one at the airport) you need a to be on your own PNR. If you are on one PNR, you can't be added to the list - hence the question - do you want to split and be considered for the upgrade (separately) or do you want to stay on the same record, without the chance of the upgrade.

If you were both on the list, you likely had the PNR split at some point.

That's the odd thing, PNR didn't split, same number. We both were on the UG list as well. The only thing I can think is either clearing the first leg had something to do with it, or they are "fixing" the problem.. I personally doubt it's getting fixed....wishful thinking..lol

Reading back through this thread, it sounds like splitting is the best way to use a GPU for two pax, since R=1 a lot of time. I'm a 1K and my GF is a Silver.

We've already cleared on the outbound, so I assume no issue with splitting.

A few questions:

1) For the return, we've got two legs on LH connecting to LHR-SFO. Is there any downside to splitting related to the LH legs?

2) Will my GF keep the advanced E+ on the LHR-SFO in coach unless one of us gets upgraded?

3) Even with splitting, my Silver GF will have 1K priority for the GPU, correct?

1. You may have to be with her for lounge access, priority boarding/security. She will not get luggage allowances of a *G.

The only potential thing I was worried about when this happened to me was he split of the partner PNR becoming problematic. A couple of years ago, wife and I were flying a domestic short hop connecting to an NH TPAC, and was quite scared that if a split happened, it would cause a problem for the partner segment. So I specifically told the agent at checkin not to split of. Of course, they did anyway.

Turns out nothing abnormal happened. I called NH right after clearing security to ensure everything was still in order with them, and it turns out it wasn't a problem, though I believe our NH PNR was split as well. Was worried that would be an issue, but boarding, etc. went smoothly.

And LHR-SFO is a really difficult upgrade. The odds of a non-status pax clearing are probably close to zero.

Hmmm - I thought that only applied to award tickets but see that it also applies to upgrades.

I'll have to think about what I do. It'd be nice if R=1, I could split and upgrade her so I still keep my 1K priority, but I doubt that's possible. Tough call!

You could....if you saw R1 call in..explain you want her to be upgraded and work out the process w the agent. It may take awhile but can be done.

Good day, FTers,

My late August trip to HNL is already upgraded SFO-HNL with 2 RPUs for me and Mrs. Transportprof.

Our connecting flight form YVR (A319) is waitlisted, with F3, R0. We're currently on a single PNR, and I'm wondering whether it makes sense to split the reservation?

I can see us getting one upgrade and not the other this way, and would prefer to either get two or none. I guess there is a slightly greater chance to get two individual upgrades with split PNRs than one double upgrade on the same PNR.

I also wonder if the "Separate Traveler(s)" sic button on the web site would do this? It's not even grammatically correct. How would you separate a single traveler? Why is the "(s)" there?

Could anyone who's been through this please report on the actual result from pressing "Separate Traveler(s)" and the results for being waitlisted for R space as two single PNRs rather than one double?
