As a follow-up to my previous post, I saw R=1 on my itinerary from YVR-SFO, and split our reservation so that Mrs. Transportprof is now in F.
F=2 now, and I am hoping that there will be at least one more seat that gets opened up in R between now and the end of the month. Everything else on both PNRs looks like it survived the split intact. We shall see, and I'll post at least one more update, depending on how the trip works out. |
My flight tomorrow night is oversold in coach, so F reads (1/6 + 4 blocked). Is it possible for R >= 2 when there's technically only one F seat for sale? Don't want to get passed over with my companion because we don't split early enough.

Splitting did the trick?
Booking ORD-IAD-DXB and return in December for 2 Prem Plats (by then, both MMs). Upgrade with miles was available on the outbound from the outset, and I switched our return by one day to get 20A and B on the DXB-IAD, as consolation prize for no upgrade.
Booked us on a single PNR, but when I checked united.com 1/2 hour later to make sure everything looked ok, we weren't showing as waitlisted for the upgrades on the return  I immediately phoned and had us put on the waitlist. The agent couldn't see any upgrade availability for DXB-IAD, though we did get IAD-ORD (whoopee.) So I told her to split the record. 20 minutes after the email with the new PNR...poof! two upgrade emails. It doesn't make sense that the split did it - if it were RN2/R2 we should have gotten them anyway, right? - but you'll never convince me of that! I know, we now have the risk downstream that we get treated separately in IRROPS or GA moves us around not recognizing that we are a group traveling together, but I'll take it, for a trip of this length. |
Yet another split or not split question. My wife and I are both 1K on same locator. On a flight in 3 days with F7 and R4. But no joy in CPU. Might splitting us up increase the chances of an upgrade? I was not sure if they would by-pass us and give the upgrade to a lower status flier if only 1 seat was available right now.
I am willing to roll the dice to get an upgrade now for my wife, and hope for me to clear in the next 3 days with so much R space showing. |

Thanks! I split them. It is interesting that with F7 and R4, a 1K on a U fare does not clear even when within 60 hours, for a 3 hour flight. It is not like a lot of people are going to pay a huge upgrade fee for such a short flight.
UA has become the none-pass of upgrades. |
Best Strategy for PNR Split re: Upgrade & E+
My wife and I are flying from SFO to FLL later this month. Scenario is as follows:
Me: 1K Wife: No Status On outbound, we are currently booked in the same PNR with confirmed RPU upgrades. On return, I need to take an alternative flight to another destination due to work and was going to not use/throwaway the return ticket. We currently both have RPU's pending for the original return. Wife does not care about the upgrade, but does not want to lose her E+ aisle seat. Given this info, when is the best time to split the PNR to make sure she doesn't lose her E+ aisle seat? Many thanks. |
I know this doesn't help you, but I had this same EXACT scenario a few weeks ago coming back from Vegas, I had to split off from my wife in IAH, I had no time to ask questions as I had about 14 hours notice.
I am just as interested in the answer though |
You can split at any time. The E+ will hold, absent "random seat changes".
I would split earlier v later and watch the return for IRROPs/schedule changes, allowing at least for you a partial refund. |
Help! My ticket is all screwed up.
@OLCI, I pressed Split.. My outgoing is all UA Metal.. Everything is OK. But my return is all screwed up. it's ANA flight... After the splitting, I now have 3 ANA PNRs: -my original ANA PNR (HKG-HND-YVR) -my new ANA PNR (HKG-HND) -companion ANA PNR (HKG-HND) HND-YVR is missing.. What happened to final leg to get me home? Do I ignore this and just use the original ANA PNR? To add to the complexity, it's an Expedia Bulk ticket. Who do I call to fix this? Expedia? United? ANA? Nobody wants to touch this ticket. |
To split or not to split PNR
Call ANA with your PNR and confirm your flights. They will have all original details.

Finally had a good experience traveling with a GM companion LAX-ORD on a Monday night redeye. Held off on OLCI at T-24 and we were both upgraded at about T-14. Once we cleared I was able to check us both in normally without being prompted to split. First time this strategy has worked. I think the flight just happened to be very light on elites. Despite what everyone says about upgrades on hub-to-hub, I've cleared three times LAX-ORD in 2 years, out of about 5 trips.

Split or Not Question
I'm 1K and Wife is Silver. We are on a set of December N fares IAH<->IAD on a 767-300 with 30BF seats. Both flights are about 1/4 - 1/3 filled (from seat map) in BF. I'm debating whether to wait for an upgrade or to split the reservation and put her in BF via miles or RPUs. I'll take my chances with a CPU as the flights are on mid-week/weekend days. Any thoughts or recommendations. Should I just wait for the 96-Hour window to open and take action then, based on what I see happen to the upgrade list? TIA |
If you have 1/2016 RPUs, split and apply them now (since they expire soon after).
If you don't, and only have 1/2017 RPUs, take the risk and wait until T-96 to see how much R remains. |
