better to split a GPU waitlist request?

Hi,

I have a question regarding a wait-listed GPU reservation - there are 2 of us in the PNR if they only release 1 R space at a time - I guess we would be skipped each time?

So does it make sense to split the PNR?
Would there be a disadvantage for the silver being spilt from the 1K in this case?

Thank you for your advise!^

Yes, you are correct; if you don't split, you will only clear if R is 2 or more. So if UA opens one seat at a time, you will be skipped.

The GPU carries the status of the 1K account holder, so splitting will not affect waitlist priority.

The only real downside of splitting is in case of IRROPS the itineraries may be rebooked separately (with the 1K receiving preferential treatment).

That is what I thought it would be.....but since we are together - in an IRROPS case I would handle the situation anyway so that should not be an issue....

Could a 1K 'rejoin' the PNRs if the second GPU was applied and reestablish the 1K status for both tickets?

Once split, PNRs can not be rejoined.

For certain items, such as bag wavier, the agent can see the split and will provide the elite benefit.

Years ago I had two separate PNRs and I called to see if we could have them joined. I couldn't remember the outcome. Maybe they put a note on our PNRs saying we were together. Could that be true or am I imagining things?

Yes - they offer to do that typically.

+1. It's worth noting that "Noting the reservation" does nothing with the system—it is solely intended to help reps understand that the PNRs were once one PNR.

On the Manage Reservations screen just below the list of reservations there's a Combine Selected blue button. I always thought the button was for combining

1. my own nested reservations
2. reservations made through my account

It appears that was a wrong assumption. But I am curious, what is that button actually for?

Your viewing convenience. It has no substantive effect.

So sad, yet so true.

I think if you made two reservation (two PNRs) from your account: e.g., one for someone else and another for your self with the same flights and then you wanted to join them you could. (Seems I did this last year).

But if you make the above on a single reservation (PNR) and you had it split, the two can never be rejoined.

No. You can link them for your own viewing purposes. That's it. They do not get consolidated into a single PNR.

Ironically, I'm looking to split a PNR well in advance of travel to increase the chances of two upgrades clearing via RPU.

My fiancé (Plat) and I (Silver) are on the same PNR SFO–JFK and we've applied her 2 RPUs to the reservation to be waitlisted for upgrades.

Since being on the same PNR decreases our chances of having the upgrades clear, I want to split our PNR and can't figure out how to do that the United.com. Is this possible, or do I need to call UA? Or is it not possible at all until check-in at T-24?

When you bring up your reservation details online scroll down past the flight details to the traveler(s) information - there is a "Separate Traveler" link at the bottom of the passenger info. Good luck with your upgrade!
