Depends on if a CPU eligible or not flight
The full detail are cover in Understanding the United Upgrade List Comprehensively, there are a number of subcases First , GS or GS supported waitlists need PN, not PZ. which makes them higher priority, even for CPU For CPU flights, 1Ks on YBM fares are next Next are PlusPoints or mileage supported upgrades ranked by status, fares, those with PresPlus/Club/Infinite cards, Corporate Preferred travelers, >$25K Chase MP cardholders, time of request Note if a PremPlus flights, those with a paid PremPlus fare are prioritize over Economy paid fares Then if a CPU flight, 1Ks and lower elites are ranked by the same process as supported upgrades Again this is the simplified list To discuss chance of upgrade, see [Consolidated] Chance of upgrade clearing on my flight very helpful thank you again! Nice to know that the PP upgrade is prioritized over the CPUs. |

After a few frustrating experiences, I've decided I'm going to call GS to force upgrades. Every. Single. Time.
It used be flying in/out of MFR, even silver status might get upgraded. Recently, I've seen cabins that were half empty fill up as soon as online check-in is available. Apparently, upgrades are being sold to non-status pax for nothing at check-in I guess United will make an extra $50 this way. But they'll need to subtract the phone agent cost for all the times I call to avert it. |
Canceling Itinerary with PlusPoints
Plat with an upcoming trip IAD-FRA in Sept and first time having the opportunity to use PlusPoints for Polaris. Booked into W and want to apply my full 40 to move to Polaris but of course there is a waitlist. I don't mind this, but I'm waiting to see if any I or IN fares open up so I can use miles instead of cash. My concern became apparent when I went to apply my PP for the upgrade and it says they are non-refundable once confirmed. Obviously I want to get on the list sooner rather than later to increase my chances early on, but does anyone have any experience with canceling a flight after a PP upgrade is confirmed?
I see from scrolling this thread SDCs result in a refund of the PlusPoints if it's a confirmed upgrade, but nothing about canceling an entire itinerary. I'm trying to get a future flight credit AND my pluspoints back if an award seat happens to open up (even as late as the day before). Long time creeper, first time poster. This place is a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate it all. |

Except for Skip the Waitlist, which (a) requires more PlusPoints than you have and (b) isn't offered to Europe at the moment, if you cancel your ticket, the PlusPoints will be refunded, even if the upgrade has cleared. The nonrefundable part refers to canceling just the upgrade while keeping the ticket.

My wife and I are both first time platinum members, so this is our first time using plus points. I am trying to upgrade an itinerary that costs 40 plus points each and keep getting an error message that I don't have enough points. Upon further examining the issue, I see that the system is trying to deduct 80 plus points from my account. What I want done is to have the system deduct 40 plus points from each of our account, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance! |

You'll probably need separate PNRs. Call to have the reservation split, then each of you can upgrade your own intinerary with your own points. Maybe an agent can apply PPs from different accounts to a single PNR - worth asking.

Anyone know how to apply pluspoints (myself) when the screen does this?
There's nothing to select. It's the same every time, and trying from the app doesn't work either, which isn't surprising as it seems to use the same webpage. The reservation looks otherwise normal. Does anyone have ideas about how to do it myself, or do I need to call? |

Plus Points Upgrade
Have an upgrade request for the SFO to AKL leg of LAX-SFO-AKL trip. 40 points for Business, 20 points for premium plus currently on waitlist. I declined LAX to SFO upgrade waitlist as I do not want to spend 20 points to upgrade the 1.5 Hr flight.
If my long haul clears and I end up spending 20 or 40 points, and I request LAX to SFO after that fact, do I need to pay 20 additional plus points or will it be part of the 20/40 points that I already paid to upgrade the long haul? |
I believe that would be 2 separate upgrades, so yes additional PPs, but I'll let the experts chime in.
Can you do an upgraded for the whole outbound trip, LAX-AKL? I think you can request upgrade for LAX-AKL and then if your long haul doesn't clear you get a refund regardless of the domestic leg clears or not. Not sure how it works for PPs, same as a MUA? I've done a MUA for the outbound trip which included a domestic leg. |
