United Luft codeshare

Booking trip to UK. There is a United flight operated by Luftansa. Can see and book flight on either company's website. Smarter to book on with the firm who's equipment it is or with the one who is operating the flight??? pondering delayes/cancellations etc etc

If you book with United, you'd be dealing with United for schedule changes, and if you book with Lufthansa, you'd be dealing with Lufthansa for schedule changes. United is probably easier to deal with on this front. If status matters to you, PQP earnings will be different as well. For cancellations/delays on the day of, either carrier can assist.

Thanks. Concern was booking via one of them might be more risky in terms of re-scheduling or cancellations. Not concerned about points; currently have no status. Just booking quick 4 night flight to UK for fam.

Oh the other question was seats; Luft allows me to select seats now; United doesn't.. is this because they're operating the flight??

Honestly, if all else truly is equal: i.e., you don't care about mileage earning, fare is the same, status isn't important, just book with the carrier operating the flight. Cut out the complexity. On day of operation, you'll be dealing with them anyway, and should anything happen before then, it's much easier to not have multiple parties pointing fingers at each other over who controls the ticket, who you need to deal with if you need a flight change, etc.

Yes.

My rule of thumb is to never book a codeshare unless there's a compelling reason to do so. Thus far, I've never found such a strong reason.

i had it backwards.. it's a United plane and on Luft's website it says "operated by United". So it's just a codeshare for luft.. so i should book on United then,

I am inclined to book with UA mainly for if I have to cancel. UA credits are much easier for me to use than credits with any non-US carriers.

Booking LH on UA can be a major headache, but if it is a UA flight, definitely book via UA. They have a much better website and it is always better to cut out the middleman. LH IT has a difficult enough time with their own flights, so I can only imagine what horrors befall anyone trying to manage a UA flight through them.

this. Plus just general policy. Not 100% sure about LH, but UA has no change fee ex-US, and sometimes at least internationally via the no charge for changes in the fare rules. I dont know about all international carriers, but I think thats mostly a US airline thing unless you are booking fully flexible fare. So thats a good reason to potentially book a codeshare via UA vs. directly with operating carrier.

Using LH credit

I have some LH flight credits, but reside in the USA.

Can I use the credits to buy tickets on flights operated by UA from LAX-EWR?

If so, how? I dont see LAX-EWR as a valid pair on the LH website or the ITA matrix.

Probably need to call in to LH since its not something they want to necessarily sell, but Lufthansa and United have agreements that allows Lufthansa to book an entire UA itinerary on 220 ticket (and vice versa UA can do an entire LH group itinerary on 016 stock).

IMO United are easier to get hold of and deal with in case you need phone assistance at any time.
