This us an archive thread, the active thread is General discussion of UA's inflight service (Domestic / International, all cabins)
previous thread: COVID Era UA inflight service changes

Thread is for general discussion of the state of UA in-flight service / catering, comparison to other carriers, past UA offerings and concerns with management decisions.

For a specific post about a recent in-flight food, use the appropriate Let's Eat .... thread.

The current Onboard Service descriptions by UA.com

Long-haul international premium cabin dining
North America, Caribbean and Latin America premium cabin dining
United Economy dining

Since the UA website is extremely vague, I'm looking for a few volunteers to submit data, and I will summarize to complete the wiki. kind regards, phkc070408

Shockingly yes. Worst flight in the system IMHO. The breakfast is awful, no Polaris lounge available, no service on plane. Should at least be a lunch services with courses vs. that horrible breakfast burrito...

Yep. LHR-EWR over the summer, I was asked by a FA to lower my window shade about an hour and a half into the flight. No sun was shining in on any other passengers. I told her I'd like to keep it open, and she said that it was UA policy to shut the windowshades over the ocean. Huh? At noon? I shut it about 1/3. The good thing is that I didn't see her again until the meal service about 4 hours later.

Last March we brought our teenage son over with us on an overnight flight to LHR, and we had a British FA who was super sweet with our boy. Chatting in the galley, she did an eye roll when asked about long haul service compared to the old Continental we had been used to for decades. I joked that Brits weren't exactly known for their service, she laughed and said that compared to UA TATL, Brits would be considered the equal of the best Asian carriers in comparison.

As above, yes.

This is the type of service that broke my reluctance to use the call button.

I give it a grace period to let service settle in, but have no aversion to smashing that button as much as needed on UA

United loves to serve breakfast. My favorite are the SFO/LAX->EWR flights that depart at 9:30am and arrive at 6:30pm, but all they serve is breakfast. The bottomline is breakfast is cheap and the least work for FAs.

I'm on an upcoming UA 1635 (LAX-IAD, departs 1pm) in domestic F, and the manage reservation page says meals are not offered on this flight...Can this possibly be right?

It's the same amount of work nowadays, since everything is one tray. Also, you should have received a pre-landing snack - hummus or meat/cheese plate.

After years of being chided by some on this forum to "use the call button, that's what it's for" (heaven forbid UA FAs patrol the galley occasionally during daytime Polaris flights to do something beyond snatching empty glasses from wide-awake passengers without making eye contact), I finally did it a couple of weeks ago and ... no response. Eventually I just walked to the galley and asked for something, though I felt like an intruder.

When they serve breakfast they don’t have to do the nuts before the one tray delivery.

And if it's the nuts that's stopping excellent service, well then.

After takeoff the FA's made a PA announcement that they were "short staffed" and service would be modified. So it was really one tray with the drinks and nuts on there too. At least the steak was decent.

.
Short staffed? Aren't there FAA rules? That sounds like BS to me.

Bare minimum is 1 FA per 50 physical seats. The extras probably didn't show that do the prep in the galley and stuff.

Correct … FAA minimum is 7 for the 789, staffed with 9 for International. The plane can leave with the FAA minimums - service is scaled back and crew receive additional “short crew pay” per hour.
