Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good

The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Almost that time of the month again. Do you all think UA will likely extend the waivers until August 31?

Cancellation/Quarantine Rules

If I am reading correctly, a UA ticket bought for travel June 1 to December 31 can be cancelled, if changes are made before July 31. (Is that right?)

I want to buy a ticket to go to Puerto Rico in late August. But my state just announced today that travelers coming from PR need to quarantine for 14 days. I'd like to book the ticket, and cancel in a few weeks if the quarantine order hasn't been lifted. Can I do that, or would I be charged a cancellation fee? I can't find an answer to this question on the UA website. The website seems to discuss only tickets bought before March 2 or changes made before July 31. But I would cancel this trip probably around August 20-25 if the quarantine was still in effect. (If it wasn't in effect, I would go on the trip. I know they might re-impose a quarantine while I was in PR, but that's a chance I'd be willing to take.)

Thanks in advance!

....
No it is not correct

For new bookings:
A cash ticket brought today (before 31 July) can be changed in the next 12 months with no change fee but potentially with a fare difference. It can not be refunded except for true refundable fare (expensive) or a greater than two hour schedule change.

An award ticket booked before 31 July for 2020 travel can be canceled and miles redeposited for free with 30 day notice

Thanks, WineCountryUA. It looks like except 4 September changes, everything else is only for August.

Don't forget that as it stands, Puerto Rico has rolled back its planned reopening and is now not only at "essential travel only" but requires either a negative Covid-19 test result (taken within 72 hours of arrival) or a 14-day quarantine (at least until the negative result is back).

That 72 hours can be tough to meet and, depending on where "my state" is, could mean that you face quarantine for a few days on arrival anyway.

Thanks. Then it seems like my best bet is to just wait and see what happens - if the quarantine ends, I could book last minute. I suspect prices won't go up that much anyway.

Do I read it right that PVG-SFO is going down to nil? Are they just giving up their slot from China?

I think it means that SFO-ICN-PVG will continue into September, whereas the SFO-PVG nonstop remains discontinued.

I have a ticket SFO-HKG in November on UA 869, connecting to HKG-NRT 6 days later, and returning KIX-SFO 14 days after that. (The ticket was purchased directly through UA in December.)

Now that Hong Kong has extended their mandatory 14 day quarantine for all arrivals (and not allow non-HK resident US citizens to enter) to the end of the year, even if I wanted to fly into HKG and be quarantined the whole time, I wouldn't be able to.

I just called and was told that I would only qualify for a ETC, or I could "wait and see" if the flight gets canceled to get a refund. I asked if I had to cancel by July 31, and was told no, I could cancel at any time and get a full value ETC. Is this right? (That's not how I'm reading the waiver...)

I'd love to wait and see if UA 869 is canceled - according to ExpertFlyer my party of 3 are the only people with seat reservations on that flight - but if the flight still operates I don't want to lose the opportunity for a credit.

Thank you!

(I don't know if this matters, but it's all UA metal except the HKG-NRT flight on NH, all in K class.)

Quarantine entry issue is not a refundable reason -- very hard to be sure the HKG will maintain the quarantine that long (easy to shorten than to extend again.

Incorrect at the moment but if UA extends the waiver then you might get more time. UA has been extending on a monthly basis, we will know soon -- but don't expect more than a month at a time and it will end at some point.

Any update or speculation on an extention of the change fee waiver to August 31st or beyond. Have not seen reports of anyone doing so.

No announcement yet and based on last month, probably none until at least Friday, 31st later in the day.
