Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Change is here. Change fees are gone. We’re permanently getting rid of change fees for most Economy and premium cabin tickets for travel within the United States. This includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Learn more

For all other destinations, change fees are waived through December 31, 2020. See terms and conditions
We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.

It depends upon the fare rules. In most cases, changing the first flight coupon triggers a re-price at the current level.

Your chance of getting UA to waive this is nil for a voluntary cancellation. For an involuntary cancellation (i.e., UA changed the schedule), if you're moving travel dates by more than a day or two, it's probably not much better, but you can ask.

I want to make a trip to Europe at end of August (understanding it may be canceled depending on how things go) but am unable to do so right now.

But if fare happens to be higher by then, UA would likely make you pay the difference in order to change to the non-stop.

Yeah I know that’s a risk

I guess I wasn’t so curious about my specific situation, but more about whether United is really not planning to operate those flights to Europe in Aug/Sept/Oct or whether it is simply waiting it out until the travel ban is lifted and then it will start to expand its schedule again

I think United (or any airline) will be unwilling to commit to a schedule given that both the border control situation and demand is a complete unknown right now. When they start selling out the few flights they are operating today, they will slowly add more. It definitely won't be a light switch.

What is your record for "This flight segment is waitlisted" in a single PNR?

I have an international trip booked for June. Apparently, it won't happen. But United (computer, not human) is trying to make it happen by adding new flights every week and then the previously new flight became "waitlisted." So, I have 24 segments with "This flight segment is waitlisted." It had 14 of those last week. The trip starting date is another month away. So, there is a good chance that the total number of "waitlisted" segments can exceed 50 before the trip is eventually cancelled.
What is your record?

That -- not the likelihood of a refund fight -- is the primary reason that I'm not currently shopping for UA flights, myself; I'd be able to use flight credit, if it came down to it, but I'm not willing to let them keep the residual if I have to turn a more expensive trip into a less expensive one.
unless something has changed in the last day or two (or I’m behind), if you cancel, you still have the FFC or ETC option - in fact, canceling leaves you with FFC, but you can always choose later to convert to an ETC . Granted that can change, I guess, the ETC option is essentially a workaround to the restriction on not being able to get the residual value back. If you don’t know your new travel option, or you do, but new fare is lower, just convert to an ETC, then use that to pay, and you keep the value left. True, doesn’t work in the case where partner flights are involved, but likely would be fine in many cases.

Yes, you're correct on both counts; currently, you can use an ETC to work around this restriction, but also, it can change. I fully expect UA to drop that option at some point. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not willing to bet on it.

This needs its own thread!
I have a trip to EDI booked for August which is now up to 15 waitlisteds. It would be longer but the changes seem to autoaccept and reset every once in a while. I'm not sure how much more interesting it can get since United isn't flying to EDI for the foreseeable future.

I have award tix for WDH in September. I have UA flights from MCI-ORD to connect to the ET flight to WDH. Are you saying that the flight MCI-ORD is already cancelled? According to the chart in the wiki at the top UA currently has no flights at all anywhere from Kansas City. If ET is operating the flight ORD-ADD-WDH but United isn't flying to/from MCI, would UA have an obligation to get me to Chicago on another airline since these are UA award tickets? Would I have to buy a ticket on another airline to keep my ET flights? If I go on UA.com and do a booking for the MCI-ORD and ORD-MCI portion of the trip on the dates I am flying I can buy a ticket. Is United selling tickets on flights they have already cancelled?

I think you are mis-reading that information, for May and June, UA has MCI flights to ORD, DEN and IAH

Question confused about cancellation deadline for award flights in June

In the headline at:

https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/covid-update.html

United says;

"you now have until May 31 to change or cancel any travel you’ve booked through the end of the year without fees."

But then, at:

https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...l/notices.html

United says:

"If you’re planning to cancel your award travel, we’re waiving all redeposit fees for award flights with travel dates on or before May 31, 2020. We’re also waiving redeposit fees for award flights with travel dates on or before December 31, 2020, that are changed or canceled at least 30 days before the departure date."

Well, as I read it, that's a contradiction for award flights in June. The top quote says I have until May 31 to cancel any flight on Jun 16 without any fees, but the bottom quote says I only have until May 17 to cancel without redeposit fees if it happens to be an award flight.

So for an award flight in mid-June, by when does someone have to cancel to avoid redeposit fees, May 31, or much earlier?

Thanks.

I must be because the only line mentioning Kansas City is suspension of service to SFO, which I knew about.

This could cause problems for my next vacation in January, which is UA flights to PPT via SFO. If service MCI-SFO is not resumed by then I will have to cancel the Tahiti trip since I won't be able to get to SFO for the SFO-PPT portion of the ticket.

Hard to know what January will be likely but MCI-DEN-SFO might be a options withut too much additional travel time. But schedules for January are far in the future.
