On UA 4497 today, my wife (Silver) and I (Platinum) were #1 and 2 on the upgrade list with 8 of 10 booked. 1CD went out empty. My sense is that the gate agent was new or inexperienced (she was reading pre-boarding order off of a paper). Still pretty disappointing, I wish I had said something during boarding but figured they'd just pull us up before departure. I did notice the standby list was cleared.

Had a Skywest flight that was originally scheduled on a CRJ. Got an equipment swap to an E175, so that's already an upgrade.
The F inventory never populated, and the waitlist was empty.
I inquired at the gate, and the gate agent told me he wasn't sure if the system would let me upgrade "officially" but that he'd cleared it with the cabin crew and that I could sit up front. It seems that he then called up one other 1K and a GS and told them the same thing, because the flight ended up with 3 up front, 9 empty seats, and no (official) list.
It probably would have cleared all the way down to Silver if they'd run the full list. Luckily it was a short flight, and anyway if you book a CRJ and you get an E175, I doubt you can be too upset. But I'm still glad that I asked.

Upgrade not cleared despite empty seat

Upgrade list before flight close

Upgrade list after flight close
Was recently on a flight where after boarding, they offloaded a passenger and never cleared the upgrade list. I've had it happen one other time in my many United segments but this time I was #1 on the list and kind of annoyed. Wrote in to 1k voice and they responded very quickly but immediately brushed it off with no compensation.

Suspicious activity on 2095 ORD LAX on 7/14. Unfortunately our 787-10 was downgraded to a 777HD, and my PP seat went with the dodo, but we had 2-4 open seats in first routinely come and go without anyone clearing the list.
Two seats popped up empty right before departure and the flight was always 26/28 so two revenue customers certainly did not get the upgrade they should have.
I might look upfront later to see if any nonrev are seated in the empty seats which would be a shame as the two GA managing the flight seemed to have their act together and handled boarding very well.

Because from where Im seated I could see anyone moving up and no one was moved. If they were upgraded, they should appear as cleared on the list and the seats occupied but were 90 minutes from landing and the seats are still vacant on the map. If my two roommates finally go to pee Ill take a look upfront.

Finally a group pee break and on the way back I was able to see not just those two seats but three seats in total were vacant. So not shenanigans but definitely a failure to process the upgrade list properly and IIRC there is a thread to report that.

Not saying that is what you saw -- probably just a lazy agent at ORD - -but things aren't working like they used to....

Upgrade not received
Yesterday, I flew United Express from AVl-EWR. I was first to be upgraded (per United's app).
An upgrade seem like a slam dunk since they were 4+ 1st class seats available right before takeoff.
The upgrade did not happen even though there were multiple available first class seats
I asked the flight attendant If she was aware why I was not upgraded even though I was first (I showed her the United app) She very curtly told me "I have no idea, it's up to the gate agent" and she proceeded to give the first class seats to watch seem like random people and to make matters worse another flight attendant (who wasn't working) took a first class seat
I didn't want to make a big deal as it was a short flight. However it bothers me.
Has this happened to anyone before? For what it's worth - I have 1K status and have for many years

Were you first before boarding started?

Welcome to FT!, Bsd925
General suggestion is if you are at the top of the list and there are multiple open seats is not to board. And tell the GA you will be wait for them to clear upgrades. This is likely a case the GA messed up, too much of a hurry to close out the flight. Unfortunately this sometimes happens and a little proactiveness helps -- something your learn on FT.
FAs will not process upgrades, not their role but once they close the doors, they will certainty let other employees move up.
