BOS - LAX, 7/12 6:25am flight, my son's companion upgrade cleared at exactly one hour before the flight (mine cleared at check in 24 hours in advance). 3 seats went out empty on this 6.5 hour flight.
That said, the 9am and evening flights were very booked up, the evening flight they were selling First for $2,300! - Tom |
ORD-ROC A320
Upgrade email generated at T-48 Different from my a recent flight where ROC-EWR upgrade went to the gate with 14/20 open seats in F. |
Recent trip
Five out of five segments cleared, XN->R. Thanks for the Chase Explorer card. The routing was RIC-DEN-BUR-DEN-ORD-RIC. RIC-DEN on A320 while ORD-RIC on A319. |
I received a CPU on my upcoming RDU-IAH flight. I was assigned a specific seat and did not change it. Now after I have checked-in for my flight my boarding pass says "see agent" for my seat but still says First class cabin. Has anyone else had this happen?

possible equipment swap? I’ve seen this on things like an E75 to E70 swap, and because of this, F was overbooked by 2. I kept my seat, but wife got the see agent. It was ORD-CVG, so not a big deal. Wife was apparently the last person upgraded hence her message. The gate asked for 2 F volunteers for $250 each - I went up for both of us but someone else beat us and so we had to split up - it was either me getting downgraded, or my wife. She got a $250 voucher, which i thiught was pretty good for a short flight. I honestly, on that short a segment, would’ve rather both gone back to coach and $500 for future flights, but it didn’t work. Good luck. |

That seems to be exactly what happened. I previously it was a ERJ-175 but it is now showing at a ERJ-170 when I view the reservation details. So in a situation like this where First is over sold and I got in to First via a confirmed CPU but there is still open seats in economy what happens? Will United take back the CPU put me back in E/E+? Or do they treat people in First with a CPU the same as a paid ticket and offer a voucher to get a volunteer to give up their seat?

Unsure if this behaviour is universal as this has fortunately only happened to me once. Would be curious to see what the FAA's opinion is on how complimentary upgraded pax should be treated. Safe Travels, James |
Thanks everyone for the replies. From what I have read hear an other thread United is not required to give compensation for downgrades if it was from a CPU but often will. I'll update with what happens tomorrow.

My experience in having this happen to me suggests that they treat it the same as a paid upgrade/fare. Several months ago I had a CPU on a short segment ORD -> YYZ red-eye flight. The flight went MX and when I reached the Premier Access Customer Service Centre at ORD at 1 AM was offered to be rebooked on an AC flight in J (which I accepted) later that day (with UA putting me up in a hotel, comping my food/bevs, etc.)

Checked my SAN flights which have been waitlisted for 4 months now as they're coming up in a bit more than a week. Down to F7 (a 739) and F1 (a 738). Not looking good. I swear, I have not had a waitlisted upgrade clear in a loooong time. At this point, I'm looking at switching flights at T-24 if anything else opens up, but the other nonstops are even worse, so I may be looking at connecting in DEN or IAH (though at T-24, I don't expect much there, either).
