Not broken. Enhanced!

Well that explains it!

I could potentially see this as being on purpose. Not showing any upgrades clearing gives the impression that upgrades don't clear, which provides the perception that you need to buy F to get into F (for almost any flight) which isn't true.

And, conversely, it gives the impression that status is pointless to acquire.

There's an existing thread on this; the latest rumor was that UA has acknowledged that this is an error and plans to correct it.

I just did IAD-MCO-IAD and on both flights there were 0 CPUs, which I found highly unusual. I have even cleared MCO as Silver. I did notice they released all of the IN/I inventory a couple days out, so maybe people are booking with points last minute or did the ~$149 buy-up. Also, MCO A fares are pretty low. Even RPUs/mileage ugprades would have shown up on the cleared list, and I was surprised not to see a single check mark either flight.

MCO can be a heavy business destination.

Flying MCO - LAX tomorrow evening, a Friday, and only 13 of 24 seats currently booked, very surprising.

I was offered via my reservation the standard $249 upgrade for the last 2 weeks which is also unusual. R = 8 the other day when I checked.

CPU just cleared (just hit Gold yesterday, still need to update my profile).

Cleared SFO-->ABQ and ABQ-->SFO earlier this week as a silver, both on K fares.

SFO-->ABQ cleared at T-20 when I was 1st on the upgrade list with 6/12 open F seats--in fact the entire upgrade list cleared by T-6. ABQ-->SFO cleared at the gate when I was #2 (of 2) on the upgrade list with 3 open seats. One gold cleared on the return at T-20, and me and the other silver cleared at the gate. Both flights went out with open F. Gotta love the E175, with just 4 fewer F seats than E+. Meanwhile, I have an upcoming SFO-->IAD trip where I'm sure I'll be somewhere between #35-45 on the list as usual.

E+ has become a poor indicator of CPU chances anymore. UA has gotten good enough with loads that either (A) E+ filled up earlier and me and a bunch of elites are in E- so the situation is worse than it looks or (B) E- filled up and UA upgrades several non-elites to E+ to make room in the back (for some reason, Silvers never get that free upgrade in advance of checkin...), so the situation is better than it appears.

If you see only middles remaining in E+, you may as well assume that several E+ eligible passengers are seated in E-.

Not sure I understand if you're serious or facetious about Silver, but if serious: Silver are not eligible for CPU before T-24, which often corresponds to check-in time.

Moreover, if E+ is full or close to full, and you're in a category of elite which can count E+ to determine their clearing odds (low-fare Plats, Golds, high-fare Silvers) the answer is that you won't CPU.

I'm aware the CPU window for Silvers starts at T-24. By 'free upgrade' I was referring to UA emailing customers in E- that they can move into E+ at no charge. This typically happens when E- is full and UA wants to empty E- so BE customers don't get free E+. You would think that Silvers would be the first category of customer UA would email in that circumstance, but so far it hasn't happened to me.

I CPU'ed SFO-DEN a while back (A319, at 5:30am on a Sunday). E+ was close to full, but somehow I ended up high on the waitlist (#1 or #2 I think) and was CPU'ed anyway.

On SFO-->ABQ, E+ was approximately half full by the time I checked in, but only two people were CPU'able.

Is this SOP now? If so that is a good thing if it actually works. On my flight today I can see E- is completely full but E+ is about 1/3 full including many choice window & aisle seats. If UA assigns those seats to BE folks we all might as well just book BE (except for the few flights where CPUs are likely).

I used to think CPUs only clear at the designated windows (96/72/48/24 hours before the flight) and then any time within 24 hours if the correct fare bucket opens.

I booked a ticket about 36 hours before scheduled flight time. My CPU processed about 30 minutes after booking. That's an "off time" for CPU so I'm not sure why it processed. Happy I got it though.

PS - this is for a flight that still doesn't show anyone cleared with an upgrade in the app. I read last week that United is fixing this 'bug'.

My Gold spouse cleared this week IAD-TPA (V fare) about 1.5 hours before the flight, so she did show up with a check mark on the upgrade list.

I just received notice that both my wife (no status, flying with me) and I (Silver) were upgraded IAH-MCO tomorrow. This is the second of two flights. No chance on DEN-IAH. Still, I didn't expect this one, especially at T-24 for both of us!

travel around certain holidays like 4th of July is the Full Moon season for CPUs.

I flew DEN-SEA on the afternoon of 6/23 (a Saturday) and was surprised to see the flight leave with four empty seats in the front cabin after everyone eligible had been upgraded. I don't recall that happening for a long, long while.
