United heralds its non-stop Royal Hawaii Service from JFL-HNL in Fall 1970. United used five-across seating, with more leg room as well, on its DC-8 to HNL, as it did on its 5 daily DC-8 non-stops to LAX, Not sure how long this seating lasted!

Gee, that UA 747 flying into Maui looks like Hawaiian's mid-70's livery. Or other way around...

Yep - in the case of this Maui map, the HI (DC-9) aircraft is a bit more prominent than the UA 747 - see a bit higher in the upper right corner:

Basically they were controlled by the CAB. CAB determined the routes they could fly, the fares they could charge, etc. CAB basically forbid PA from flying domestic (except as continuation International flights) and forbid carriers like UA, AA from flying internationally.

UA was basically the only airline that welcomed deregulation. Others didn’t really lobby for it and others were against it, due to being at a huge competitive advantage. There was a great documentary made in 1980 or so about UA and they go into deregulation a lot and interview Dick Ferris. Can’t find it anymore.

For more on the video and more on the changes due to deregulation, see Amazing video about United from 1979 - "DIAMONDS IN THE SKY - 2, RUNNING AN AIRLINE"

But for here, let's return to "UA's service to Hawaii in the 1970's"

And to that end, let's stay in the 70's and not present times

Returning back to the 1970s-ish (since at least one of the maps was printed in 1980..), here are two copies of the last and final map that I found for the largest of the chain:

The first is from raremaps.com:

The second is from potterauctions.com:

I think the potterauctions.com map image is better as a single image. However, raremaps.com continues to sell copies of the map and, more importantly, their web page has a quite decent zoom script to allow you to browse the Hawaii map (and the others except for Kauai) and be able to read the interesting captions and factoids that Kim Forrest put into each one.

Also interesting on this map are the _two_ UA 747: one departing ITO and the other over Hilo Bay while the HI DC-9 is shown far south of KOA.

On the back of United's Air Atlases, the following graphic of the islands that's clearly in the style of the 1970s was provided (and continuing the slogan of United's "Little Corner of the World"):

This image of one of the 1973 air atlas is from the La Jolla Map Museum. The museum's page indicates: "The “Our Little Corner of the World” slogan was used by the airline throughout the 1970s and into the 80s. In 1976, the Hawaii route accounted for 10% of the airline’s volume, and 13% of their profits."

Given the blurriness of this image, I went searching for a few more shots of this specific map and found a few on ebay that provide a little more detail and allows text about the islands to be read.
