Wife & me will be on UA 179, EWR-HKG, tomorrow Friday 11/16/2018 - we are both 1K on W fares, & using GPUs.

Wife is #2 & yours truly is #3 on the UG list.

UA app says that J is booked full (all 50 seats), & 25 have already checked in.

What are our chances?

EPILOGUE: we sat in E+.
The flight was very full and left almost 1 hour late.

UA2055 BWI-SFO on 11/18. Platinum status.
10/12 booked in first. Holding off check-in to avoid the PNR split but with only 5 on the list right now, it’s tempting...

I'd put the chances of a Plat and Plat Companion clearing on that flight at near zero. Even if there aren't any uncleared 1Ks, and none SDC or buy a ticket in the next 24 hours, they'll be selling TODs, and there's a good chance they'll find two takers for a 5+ hour flight.

Weekends are bad days for the upgrades. It's not so easy to book other days when flying for work or limited vacation days but lately I have been trying to fly my long haul international trips on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I have been more successful with my upgrades. Even my wife manages to upgrade as a Platinum on her own PNR on those days.

I know, slim to none.. oddly enough they aren’t offering a paid UG? Does that somehow mean the last 2 seats are held but not booked?

edit: Looks like our lucky day - booked seats dropped down to 8/12, and at about T-13, we both received confirmed CPUs!

That's not uncommon. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Hmmm ... I just got notice of my upgrade on the 30 min flight to DEN so reflexively put in my request to upgrade using RPU for UA 328 DEN-HNL on Wednesday (hadn't put it in before because I didn't want it wasted on the 30 min segment). There's still an offer on the website to upgrade for $756 cash but then I see there only see left is 3E. I almost figure I'm better off in 17L but guess there's nothing lost in seeing if the RPU works.

I ended up getting upgraded but the app was super buggy and showed no-one clearing off the list (I think there were two including myself). Completely full midweek flight with a couple of standbys into E+.

IAH-SCL, I would make sure you have your preferred Economy + seats as I see that upgrade more difficult. Although I would make sure I have that too for BRU-IAD as you never know what might happen 4 months from now.

Hopefully, you are only one passenger on the PNR (passenger name record) as they tend to open 1R at a time. If you are two or more, they tend to bypass you and upgrade the waitlisted passenger that is alone.
Ok, since last message we are almost 3 months further, and about 2 months before departure. This is the situation for the IAH-SCL flight:
  • J9 JN9 C9 D5 Z0 ZN0 P0 PN0 PZ0 IN0 I0 Y9 YN9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 HN0 Q9 V9 W6 S0 T0 L0 K0 G0 N9 XN0 X0
  • Still only 4 seats out 30 in Business are sold and I applied a GPU on a B-Fare being Premier Gold.
So in 3 months almost only one Biz seat has been sold. Any chance they will open up upgrade space anytime soon?

I am trying to gauge if it's even worth wasting my time on...

Flying back from GVA-DEN on Wednesday the 21st. (Wednesday before Thanksgiving)

Currently have a GPU going from GVA-FRA-IAD-DEN.

Trying to get a GPU on the SFO flight but had not opened in PZ. I am trying to go to SFO as I am at 149,500 miles.. Trying to get the extra 2 GPU/RPU.

Here are totals currently..
  • J4
  • JN4
  • C4
  • D4
  • Z2
  • ZN2
  • P0
  • PN0
  • PZ0

Is this worth even thinking about a chance to open in PZ for a GPU?

It doesnt look promising. At J9 C9 D5 Z0, UA is indicating that they believe they dont need to offer discount J fares. Keep in mind, most business class travel is purchased within a month of departure, and often even less than that. If they do, youll be behind any Global Services, 1K, or Platinum members who have already waitlisted upgrades.

I won't say zero chance, but PN=0 suggests little chance of anytime soon. PN=0 means GS customers might be waitlisted (in addition to 1Ks, Plats, and/or Golds on higher fare classes looking for PZ). I'd like my chances if I saw PN>0 for a while and P>0. Still 'way too early to predict w/ business travelers not booking until last couple of weeks before flight.

You need to look exclusively at the overwater segment to see the inventory for that flight.

The short answer: with only J4 showing, and it being the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I think your chances of clearing are very low.

You can't tell what the J inventory is, since OP has given us numbers for the full itinerary, which includes three segments.

UA has two FRA-IAD flights on Nov. 21. One is J2 C2 D2 P1 PN0 PZ0, the other is J9 C9 D9 P9 PN7 PZ7.
